At the Fort Christmas Fall Militia Encampment\, you will learn about the second Seminole Indian War from soldiers in period dress\, camped in front of the fort; this free event includes musket firing demonstrations and programs in the fort at 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on both days. \nAdmission Free – Parking Free – Public Welcome \nPark Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. \nAs the Second Seminole War escalated across Florida in 1835\, U.S. Army orders were issued to build a string of over 200 forts to garrison men and supplies in an effort to supress the Seminole Indians. As the army arrived in central Florida on Christmas Day\, 1837\, the stockade was aptly christened Fort Christmas. Fort Christmas is a typical Seminole Indian War fort\, made of tall pine pickets. The fort is 80 linear square feet\, with two block houses that are 20 square feet each\, with a storehouse and a powder magazine within the walls of the fort. The replica of Fort Christmas serves as a museum with exhibits focusing on the Second Seminole War and pioneer life in Florida. Today\, the replica fort and museum is the centerpiece of Fort Christmas Historical Park. \n \nIn addition to the park’s full scale replica of the 19th century fort\, seven restored cracker era buildings are open for tours. These pioneer homes and a school building are furnished with period furniture\, appliances\, kitchen items and hand tools. A few of these Florida cracker homes included the Beehead Ranch house\, the Taylor Creek Yates home\, and the 1916 Union Schoolhouse. This family friendly event is extremely popular\, one of Central Florida’s most interesting traditional gatherings. The Cracker houses on display belonged to families with familiar names from Florida’s pioneer days\, such as Simmons\, Wheeler\, Bass\, and Yates. \nLocation\nFort Christmas Historical Park\n1300 North Fort Christmas Road\nChristmas\, FL 32709\n407-254-9312 \nFor More Information: Call 407-254-9312 or Email Trudy.Trask@ocfl.net \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Fort Christmas Fall Militia Encampment on the weekend before Thanksgiving at the Fort Christmas Historical Park in Christmas\, Florida. \nTags:Fort Christmas Fall Militia Encampment\, Fort Christmas Spring Militia Encampment\, Fort Christmas Militia Encampment\, Fort Christmas Militia Reenactment\, Fort Christmas Historical Park\, Fort Christmas \nView other History Festivals & Events

Federal forces advanced from Knoxville and arrived on the outskirts of Blountville. Union forces quickly occupied the heights overlooking the west side of town; this chosen site was the cemetery – the “City of the Dead”. Union cannons were aligned on the gravesites of the locals and their slaves alike. Reacting to the threats\, Southern forces formed artillery on a knoll near the present-day Blountville Middle School; another line was established by Rebel forces on a nearby hillside in front of the Masonic Hall\, now the site of the maintenance building for the Sullivan County School System. The battle of artillery and cavalry began in earnest at lunchtime Union guns offered the initial volley with the Court House as the first target. In only a few minutes\, the Court House was burning.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More About The Battle of Blountville”]Though casualties were light for both armies\, the town was devastated\, with countless homes and businesses burned to the ground by fires started by the explosions of Federal guns. For four hours\, the battle raged when Union forces dislodged the Confederates who began a withdrawal to present-day Bluff City. The Confederates’ withdrawal was a pre-planned surprise counter-attack\, with fresh Confederate troops awaiting the pursuing Federals. The plan was not destined for success when Union forces discovered the Confederate plot and refused battle; the men in blue retreated to Blountville. All of the Federal forces returned toward Knoxville within two days. That fateful little day left a burning town – a burned jail\, a gutted Court House\, businesses and homes destroyed – Only a few historic structures and homes remained. \nLeft behind were the dead and wounded from both sides as well as a town destroyed. Here on this ground\, as well as in Gettysburg\, men fought and paid the ultimate sacrifice. Eventually\, both armies would withdraw from the immediate area\, but Blountville\, like much of the South\, was left smoldering\, and its citizens weeping; thus\, this once peaceful village would never be the same.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nBattle of Blountville Civil War Military ParkThe Battle of Blountville occurred largely in and around the historic town of Blountville\, Tennessee. Recognizing the importance of commemorating the battle\, Tennessee State Representative Tony Shipley spearheaded the move to establish a Civil War Park commemorating the Battle of Blountville. In February 2011\, Sullivan County passed a resolution authorizing the Sullivan County Department of Archives and Tourism to assist the Battle of Blountville Civil War Park Executive Committee in development of the park in the interest of promoting heritage tourism. The Battle of Blountville Civil War Park and its development will primarily begin in the Historic District of downtown Blountville as recognized on the National Register of Historic Sites. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Battle of Blountville Civil War Reenactment in September at the Old Hawley Farm in Blountville\, Tennessee. \n \nTags: Battle of Blountville Civil War Reenactment\, Battle of Blountville Reenactment\, Civil War Reenactment\, Tennessee Civil War Reenactment\, Blountville Civil War Reenactment \nView other Civil War Reenactments\, Encampments & Other Events

They just cleared out an area to have the dance.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nThe first Pow Wow was held in a little grove of trees which is now the memorial sitting area. It began just as a recognition of what an important social event the Pow Wow could be and it was one of the first attempts to really bring the two cultures together. The Pow Wow continued in 1995 and then in 1996 when the statue was unveiled the Pow Wow grew considerably. That year it rained and although it turned out to be a beautiful day for the unveiling of the statue\, the Pow Wow had to be held inside Hutchins memorial\, the only time that the Pow Wow had to be moved indoors. \nThe Ponca Nation has its own Pow Wow. The Pawnee Nation has its own Pow Wow. Each one of the six North-Central Tribes has its own Pow Wow. But the way the Standing Bear Pow Wow was set up\, they wanted to give each tribe in this area the opportunity to showcase its own tribal history and traditions. They chose Pow Wows because that was more of a general social event where we could involve a lot of the public. Until 2005 they rotated the event between the six tribes. Since 2006 the six tribes work together organize and host each Pow Wow at Standing Bear Park. There is a permanent Standing Bear Foundation Committee with members from each tribe serving on the committee. This is a special time during the year that the six tribes come together to work together on a major project. Learn more about the Standing Bear Pow Wow[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nThe Ponca City Setting\nThe six tribes that participate in the Standing Bear Powwow are headquartered in the Ponca City area\, making it practical for them to collaborate for the event. In addition to the tribal support for the powwow\, from volunteers to corporate partners\, there is a tremendous amount of support from the non-native community as well. \nStanding Bear Park\nThe Standing Bear Park\, Museum & Education Center in Ponca City honors all Native Americans with a 22-foot bronze statue of Ponca Chief Standing Bear. This outstanding sculpture sits on a 63-acre park that boasts a walking trail among native grasses and wildflowers\, a peaceful memorial grove\, a pond and outdoor interpretive center. These elements all come together to tell the history of American Indians In Oklahoma. \nThe Standing Bear Pow Wow is not responsible for accidents. No drugs\, alcohol or firearms are allowed on the premises. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Standing Bear Powwow on the last Friday and Saturday of September next to Standing Bear Park in Ponca City\, Oklahoma. \nTags: Standing Bear Powwow\, Standing Bear Pow Wow\, Ponca City Standing Bear Powwow\, Ponca City Standing Bear Powwow\, Oklahoma Powwow\, Oklahoma Pow Wow \nView Other Powwows in Oklahoma

The Morongo Band of Mission Indians\, sponsors of the Morongo Thunder and Lightning Pow Wow hope you join us in celebration of our Native American heritage and traditions. This is a time to reaffirm old ways and share in the discovery of new. To our elders we extend a special welcome. Our children look to you for the lessons and Examples in how to carry ancient memory\, tradition\, and culture into their modern world. Our Tribal family is extended today by the presence of members of communities near and far. \n\nMorongo Thunder and Lightning Pow Wow\nThere are no “spectators” at a Powwow. All who attend are regarded as participants. Each of Us has a place in the circle of people. Within this circle there is no beginning and no end. This coming together is at the heart of the traditional Powwow. \nHistorically\, singing and dancing have always been an integral focus at Pow Wows. Competitive singing and dancing for prize money is a fairly recent development. Only registered participants can participate in the dancing contest\, but when an “inter-tribal” dance is announced\, everyone\, including visitors\, can take part. \nMorongo Thunder and Lightning Pow Wow was named the number 1# contest Powwow in 2009 from viewers at Powwow.com. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience both Native American culture and Morongo Hospitality. We hope you will enjoy every moment of the festivities. \nPublic Welcome – Free Admission \nMorongo Pow Wow Grand Entry Schedule\nFriday 8:00 p.m.\nSaturday 1:00 p.m. & 8:00 p.m.\nSunday 1:00 p.m. \nOpen Bird Singing & Dancing Schedule\nFriday 4:00 p.m.\nSaturday 11:00 a.m. & 5:00 p.m.\nSunday 11:00 a.m. \nMorongo Thunder and Lightning Pow Wow Gallery Preview\n\nView Full Gallery\nMorongo Thunder and Lightning Pow Wow Head Staff\nEMCEE: To Be Announced\nNORTHERN ARENA DIRECTOR: To Be Announced\nSOUTHERN ARENA DIRECTOR: To Be Announced\nHEAD NORTHERN DANCE JUDGE: To Be Announced\nHEAD SOUTHERN DANCE JUDGE: To Be Announced\nHEAD DRUM JUDGE: To Be Announced\nBIRD SINGING/DANCING & To Be Announced\nTABULATOR: To Be Announced \nTentative Morogo Powwow Schedule\n[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Friday”]\n4:00pm Morongo Indian Market Opens; Registration for all activities;\n4:00pm Blessing of dance arena; Open Bird Singing & Dancing\n7:45pm Drum Call\n8:00pm Color Guard Grand Entry; Introductions\, Dance Contests\n12:00am Closing (time is approximate)[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion][su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Saturday”]\n10:00am Morongo Indian Market Opens\n11:00am Open Bird Singing & Dancing\n12:45pm Drum Call\n1:00pm Grand Entry; Intertribal Dancing\, Dance Contests\n2:00pm Powwow Registration Closes\n5:00pm Bird Contest; Dinner (5pm-7pm)\n6:45pm Drum Call\n8:00pm Grand Entry; Intertribal Dancing\, Dance Contests\n12:00am Closing (time is approximate)[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion][su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Sunday”]\n11:00am Morongo Indian Market Open\n12:45pm Drum Call\n1:00pm Grand Entry; Intertribal Dancing\, Dance Contests\, Drum Contests\n6:00am Closing (time is approximate)[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \n \nMorongo Pow Wow Dance Categories\nSenior Golden Age Men\, 65+: No. & So. Through bird metaphor and allegory\, the songs also act as lessons that instruct tribal members about stages in their lives. They are reminded that there is a proper time to “leave the nest” and start a family; that parents must let go of their maturing children. \n[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nThe original Cahuilla Bird Songs were composed of more than 300 pieces that formed a cycle of stories. Songs were sung in a precise order that accurately accounted for the chronology of the migration. In a traditional setting where the complete cycle of songs were sung\, the singing began at dusk symbolizing the beginning of the journey and ended at dawn – symbolic of the return home. \nProtocol for singing these songs is less strict in structure than some Native American traditions where only specially designated individuals are allowed to perform certain ceremonies. Today\, tribal descendants with singing talent are trained to sing the songs. Unlike many Native American dances\, bird songs use no drums for accompaniment. Rhythm is supplied by gourd or tortoise-shell rattles filled with palm seeds.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nLocation & Directions\nMorongo Thunder and Lightning Pow Wow Site\n12700 Pumarra Rd\, Banning\, CA 92220\nmorongonation.org\n(951) 849-4697 \n[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Directions”]\nThe Morongo Thunder and Lightning Pow Wow is located just off I-10 in Cabazon\, approximately 20 minutes west of Palm Springs. Seating is set up around the area where the intertribal dancing is to take place is for the dancers\, not the spectators\, so bring your own lawn chairs. It is good to ask before taking a picture out of respect for those who may have religious reasons for avoiding photos. No one should ever enter the dance arena unless invited. Do not touch the clothing of any dancer. A good rule of thumb is to wait for the reaction of the Native onlookers. If they clap\, then everyone claps. Most of the time the emcee will tell the audience what is going on and what to do. \n\nMedicine Lodge Peace Treaty Powwow\nAttending a powwow gives spectators the opportunity to glance into the history of Native Americans\, a glimpse of a centuries-old tradition and a chance to gaze upon the beauty of their regalia while listening to the rhythmic beat of their drums and their voices lifted in song. \nFood vendors will also be on-site at the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty Powwow providing the always popular Indian tacos and fry bread. There will be craft vendors selling a wide selection of Native items including shirts\, jewelry\, wooden crafts\, rugs\, wall decorations and Native items for children. \nTentative Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty Powwow Schedule\nFriday\n5:00 pm – 7:00 pm Gourd Dance\n7:00 pm Grand Entry \nSaturday\n2:00 pm – 5:00 pm Gourd dance\n5:00 pm – 6:00 pm Dinner Break\n6:00 pm – 7:00 pm Gourd Dance\n7:00 pm Grand Entry \nSunday\n2:00 pm – 4:00 pm Gourd Dance\n4:00 pm Grand Entry \nLocation\nMedicine Lodge City Park\nMedicine Lodge\, KS 67104 \nMedicine Lodge Peace Treaty Powwow Mini-Gallery\n\n \nAbout the Powwow\nDances and the ceremonies with which they are associated played an integral part in the lifestyle of the Native American. A dance was held to ask for aid from the gods before a battle or a hunt. A dance was also held to celebrate joy or to mark a mourning. Dances\, or powwows as they are now called\, are still important occasions for the American Indian. It is an occasion for making new friends and enjoying old friendships. There are not many activities where a great-grandparent and great-grandchild may participate in the same activity as they may at a powwow. \nThe word powwow is derived from the Algonquian term pau-wau\, or pauau\, which referred to a gathering of medicine men or spiritual leaders. European explorers who observed these gatherings pronounced the word wrong and passed on the wrong pronunciation to the Indians when they began learning English. \nThe history of powwows is sketchy as there was a period of time when the gatherings were illegal under the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The modern-day powwow gives Native Americans an occasion to meet\, dance\, sing\, socialize\, honor their Native American culture and share their traditions with non-Indians. \nPlanning an event like the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty Powwow can take months. If a powwow or celebration is publicized\, it is open to the public. Sometimes\, it may be open to the public but there is a charge. In that case\, it becomes more of an exhibition display. \n \nPowwow Dances\nThe Gourd Dance\, which is performed at many powwows\, including the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty Powwow\, originated in the 1800s among the Cheyenne\, Arapahoe\, Kiowa and Comanche tribes. The Gourd Clan\, formerly a warriors’ society\, now may include any member of the tribe. The members of the different gourd clans and clubs can be veterans themselves or are representatives of veterans. The red on the blanket which is worn by the dancers represents the blood which was shed by warriors and the blue on the blanket represents victory. \nThe Snake Dance is rich in symbolism. It was thought that because the snake lived so close to the ground he understood the problems of the soil and its need for water. The Indians performed the dance to the snake so he might take a message to the gods to send rain to the plants. The dances portray the snake coiling\, striking\, retreating and returning to strike again. \nOther dances that you will see at the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty Powwow\, as well as many other powwows\, includes the Round Dance\, Buffalo Dance\, War Dance and the Flag Dance\, a dance that nearly every Indian tribe has composed in recent years to honor the men and women who have served in all branches of the armed forces during the various wars. This song is the Indian equivalent of the national anthem\, and all should stand when this song is sung. \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty Powwow in Medicine Lodge\, Kansas. \nTags: Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty Powwow\, Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty Pow Wow\, Medicine Lodge Powwow\, Medicine Lodge Pow Wow\, Kansas Powwow\, Kansas Pow Wow \nView Other Kansas Powwows

The [general public] lacks the awareness about the health status and issues that Indian people face. To educate the general public about our Indian health issues\, NPAIHB started holding a “powwow\,” a traditional way to communicate our culture and Indian Health education. We provide the public with information on many cultural issues that influence the delivery of health care. We ask other Portland Area Tribal organization such as the Native American Rehabilitation Association- (NARA)\, Native American Youth Association – (NAYA)\, and the Native Indian Child Welfare Association – (NICWA) to collaborate with our event. All of the Indian organizations contribute in various ways\, through providing speakers\, resource materials\, or event awareness\, and equipment\, as needed. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Dancing in the Square Powwow in September at Pioneer Square in downtown Portland\, Oregon. \n \nTags: Dancing in the Square Powwow\, American Indian Day Celebration\, Oregon Powwow\, Oregon Pow Wow\, Portland Powwow\, Portland Pow Wow\, Portland \nView Other Oregon Pow Wows & Other Native American Events
