During the 19th century\, the ruins of the fort stood at the center of inspiration for writers\, artists\, and travelers who visited the scenic and historic Ticonderoga peninsula. In 1908\, the Fort’s restoration and reconstruction began launching the earliest restoration effort in America. Today\, the fort sits at the center of the Ticonderoga experience where guests can explore museum exhibitions\, interact with historic trades staff\, and participate in lively daily programs and special events and reenactments. But\, there are a few things that first timers should learn to expect. Most instructions will come from the announcer so make sure you’re paying attention. Certain parts of a powwow ask the public to stand for events such as the grand entry\, flag song or honor songs. Some dances\, like intertribals and round dances\, are open to the public and some are not. The announcer will inform the public when they can enter the arena to participate in a dance. Cameras are allowed and welcome\, but occasionally you’ll be asked not to photograph certain events and if you’d like to stop a dancer and take a picture with them\, the proper thing to do is to ask their permission first. The dancer’s outfit is commonly referred to as “regalia” and for Powwow dancers this is a way of life and not a show for the public so respect for their regalia is also key. Please do not touch a dancer’s regalia unless invited. Other than that\, enjoy the music\, dance\, food\, art and celebration that are going on and make sure you have a good time. No worries! Read this Powwow FAQ.”]\nWhat is a Powwow?\nA Powwow is a gathering of men\, women and children from different Native American nations. Friends\, family and new people come together to sing\, dance\, share food\, present their craftwork and socialize. These cultural events preserve Native American traditions and heritage. \nWhat is a Veteran’s Powwow?\nThe respect shown to veterans is an integral part of the Native American culture. Native Americans have a rich history in the United States Military. The veterans of today are shown the same honor and respect as the warriors of times past. At Veterans Powwows\, Native and non-Native veterans alike are especially venerated for their service. \nI’m not Native American\, are Powwows for me?\nYes! Powwows are at their core family and community events and we want to share our culture and traditions with you! \nWhy are there Head Judges?\nPowwows added dance competitions as part of the celebration which began decades ago; where exceptional dancers were recognized with “prizes” like blankets and quilts. This tradition evolved to awarding money as the prize and has since become part of the celebration. Modern day Powwows like our Veteran’s Powwow invite dancers to come and celebrate\, but also to have the chance to showcase their skills and compete against one another which adds to the excitement of the event. Head judges are respected dancers hired by the Powwow committee to oversee the dance competition and insure fair judging of the dancers. \nWhat is an Arena Director?\nThe Arena Director is the individual responsible for keeping track of the singers\, dancers and dance competitions and any other live events happening during the Powwow. The Arena Director works with the announcer to keep the Powwow organized and well-coordinated. \nWhat is the Grand Entry?\nEach powwow begins with a Grand Entry or procession of dancers serving as the “bringing together of tribes.” Dancers enter the dance circle by age and style of regalia. They are guided by two lead dancers\, a male and a female\, who follow the presentation of flags. Similar to the National Anthem\, the Flag Song is the Native American way of honoring traditional native\, state\, and American flags. The audience is expected to stand during this time.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Honoring The Veterans Powwow at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum on Saturcay\, Veterans Day Weekend in Mashantucket\, Connecticut. \n \nTags: Honoring The Veterans Powwow\, Mashantucket Pequot Museum Honoring The Veterans Powwow\, Honoring The Veterans Pow wow\, Mashantucket Pequot Museum Honoring The Veterans Pow wow\, Connecticut Powwow\, Connecticut Pow Wow \nView other Connecticut Pow Wows

Mile Branch Settlement is open only twice each year during the Washington Parish Fair in the third week of October and during the Pioneer Christmas celebration\, held the first weekend of December. \n \nAbout 150 years ago\, a small community in Washington Parish would have looked a lot like this. These log cabin homes were built by real Louisiana pioneers. The historical Mile Branch Settlement is located on the Washington Parish Fairgrounds in Franklinton\, LA. When a visitor steps through the unpainted picket fence and walks past the Richardson Gatehouse\, it is like entering another time period. A time where life coursed much slower like the bordering creek for which the settlement was named. You will find 19th century attired volunteers serving sassafras tea with gingerbread\, grinding corn into meal or grits\, cutting huge hoop-cheese slices\, and the extracting and cooking of cane syrup. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Mile Branch Settlement Christmas on the first weekend in December at the Mile Branch Settlement Christmas located at the Washington Parish Fairgrounds in Franklinton\, Louisiana. \n \nTags: Mile Branch Settlement Christmas\, Mile Branch Settlement \nView Other Living History Events

In November 1775\, Washington sent a 25 year-old bookseller-turned-soldier\, Henry Knox\, to bring heavy artillery that had been captured at Fort Ticonderoga to Boston. Knox knew the challenge before him as he wrote to George Washington on December 5\, 1775. \nThe garrison at Ticonderoga is so weak\, the conveyance from the fort to the landing is so difficult\, the passage across the lake so precarious\, that I am afraid it will be ten days at least before I can get them on this side. When they are here\, the conveyance from hence will depend entirely on the sledding; if that is wood\, they shall immediately move forward; without sledding\, the roads are so much gullied that it will be impossible to move a step. \nIn a technically complex and demanding operation\, Knox began the “Noble Train” in January 1776 at Ticonderoga and carried sixty tons of artillery through the dead of winter to Boston in just forty days. In March 1776\, these artillery pieces were used to fortify Dorchester Heights\, overlooking Boston and its harbor and threatening the British naval supply lifeline. The British commander William Howe\, realizing he could no longer hold the town\, chose to evacuate it. He withdrew the British forces\, departing on March 17\, for Halifax\, Nova Scotia thus giving Washington his first great victory of the war. \nFort Ticonderoga is the location of the first Knox Trail marker in the Knox cannon trail that traces the route of the Noble Train. The Fort Ticonderoga Museum owns 2 original artillery pieces that made the epic journey in the winter of 1776. \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Colonel Knox is Now at Ticonderoga at Fort Ticonderoga in December in Ticonderoga\, New York. \nTags: Colonel Knox is Now at Ticonderoga\, Henry Knox\, Noble Train Begins\, Fort Ticonderoga Noble Train\, Revolutionary War Reenactment \n[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion] \nView other Revolutionary War Reenactments & Other Events\nFort Ticonderoga Special Events\, History & Living History Daily Demonstrations

The NARA New Years Eve Sobriety Powwow is one of the largest sobriety new year powwows in the country\, and is certainly the largest New Year’s pary in Portland\, where thousands of Native Americans and others will close out the year with drums\, songs\, dance – and not a drop of alcohol! \n\nNARA New Years Eve Sobriety Powwow\nThe Native American Rehabilitation Association – NARA New Years Eve Sobriety Powwow\, is once again expected to draw thousands of participants and spectators. The free event unfolds in stages from noon to midnight with activities that include: NARA Honorings\, Sobriety Count Down\, Dance Performances and Art and Craft Vendors. \nPhilip Archambault\, NARA’s traditional cultural director\, Hunkpapa Lakota member and Saturday’s master of ceremonies\, started the annual powwow in a Southeast Portland school\, where it drew scarcely more than 100 people. The success of the annual NARA New Years Eve Sobriety Pow Wow is demonstrated by the size of the venue it has grown into: the Oregon Convention Center. \nThe NARA New Years Eve Sobriety Pow Wow a big deal for the Native American community\, which has historically faced trouble with alcohol. Alcoholism\, however\, plagues people of all ethnicities and backgrounds\, a fact that can become more apparent at booze-heavy holidays like New Year’s Eve\, which is celebrated by virtually every community in the country. \nThis is why the NARA New Years Eve Sobriety Pow Wow is so popular in Portland. It offers the rare party that’s big but also sober\, providing a safe and comfortable space with a Native American community that knows alcoholism too well. \nFree & Open to the Public\nAll Dancers & Drums are welcome. \nEvent Activities:\nNARA Honorings\, Sobriety Count Down\,\nAztec Dance Performance\, Art and Craft Vendors \nHead Staff\nMaster of Ceremonies: Philip Archambault\nWhipman: Ed Goodell\nColor Guard: NIVA Portland/Vancouver Chapter\nHost Drum: To Be Announced \nSchedule\n12 noon Welcoming\n12 p.m. Children & Youth Games\n5 p.m. Aztec Dancers\n6 p.m. Grand Entry\n9 p.m. Sobriety Countdown\nMidnight – Happy New Year! \nLocation\nOregon Convention Center\n777 NE Martin Luther King Jr Blvd STE 300\nPortland\,OR 97232 \nGeneral & Vendor Contact:\nCall 503-224-1044 ext 145; Email sallman@naranorthwest.org \n \nMark your calendar today so you don’t miss the annual NARA New Years Eve Sobriety Pow Wow at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland\, Oregon on New Year’s Eve. \nTags: NARA New Years Eve Sobriety Powwow\, NARA New Years Eve Sobriety Pow Wow\, NARA New Years Eve Powwow\, NARA Sobriety Powwow\, Oregon Powwow\, Oregon Pow Wow \nView Other Oregon Pow Wows
