2019 Fort Dobbs North Carolina Military Timeline

Celebrate Veteran’s Day at the annual Fort Dobbs North Carolina Military Timeline on November 9-10, 2019 at the Fort Dobbs State Historic Site in Statesville, North Carolina. Visit with soldiers and support personnel from hundreds of years of North Carolina history. The experiences of veterans of the Revolution, Civil War, World Wars and other conflicts will be shared through living history displays and weapons firing demonstrations.

Fort Dobbs North Carolina Military Timeline

In honour of Veteran’s Day, the fort hosts its annual Fort Dobbs North Carolina Military Timeline. This free public program is open to any impression related to NC history (i.e. soliders who either came from, fought in, or were imprisioned in the State of North Carolina.) The event will feature on-going displays of camp life, restored military vehicles, and firing demonstrations.

Situated in the Piedmont region of North Carolina near the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Ft. Dobbs State Historic Site provides a window into the tumultuous period of history known as the French and Indian War (1754-1763) or Seven Years War. As the only state historic site associated with the period, Fort Dobbs represents North Carolina’s link with a global war for empire that crossed five continents, lasted nearly a decade and sowed the seeds for independence.

History of Fort Dobbs
Fort Dobbs was the only permanent frontier provincial fort in the colony of North Carolina. Construction began in late 1755 and was completed one year later. It served as the military headquarters for the frontier company (approximately fifty men) as well as a safe-haven for settlers. The fort was attacked on the night of February 27, 1760 when more than 70 Cherokees were repelled. The garrison suffered two men wounded, as well as having one colonial boy killed. The Cherokee were reported to have lost 10-12 men killed and wounded. By the end of 1761, the British had essentially won the war and only thirty troops remained at the fort. Colonial leaders disbanded the troops and removed all the supplies of the garrison as settlement moved far west of the fort. The neglected fort was in ruins by 1766.

Reconstruction of Fort Dobbs
Soon after protecting the site of Fort Dobbs in 1909, the Daughters of the American Revolution recognized the need to reconstruct the blockhouse. Following initial archaeological investigations in the 1960’s and ’70’s the site became a State Historic Site, but with several key questions about the original structure still unanswered, no immediate reconstruction effort was planned.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”] In 2003, the reincorporated non-profit Friends of Fort Dobbs took up the vision of then-site manager Beth Hill to begin an effort to rebuild. More than a decade of hard work ensued. The Friends undertook a fundraising campaign to fund the effort and co-operated with State officials, historians, historic building specialists, architects, and noted archaeologist Dr. Larry Babits to develop feasible, historically sound plans and the capital needed to make Fort Dobbs stand on the banks of Fourth Creek once again.

Following several other facility improvements to the site, ground was broken for the new fort in August of 2016. A mix of modern and 18th Century construction techniques have been employed to meet the challenge of building a structure that must simultaneously meet modern building standards while also approximating an entirely hand-build piece of military engineering from 260 years ago. We hope, with your support, to have Fort Dobbs open as a living history exhibit on a grand scale by early 2019![/su_spoiler][/su_accordion]

2019 Fort Dobbs Winter on the Western Frontier

Join us for the annual Fort Dobbs Winter on the Western Frontier on December 21, 2019 at the Fort Dobbs State Historic Site in Statesville, North Carolina. This living history event will give visitors a glimpse of what daily life was like for the garrison of Fort Dobbs as they prepared to spend their first winter on the site in 1755 where life was hard and lonely. On-going displays of camp life and historic cooking will be offered, as well as musket and cannon firing demonstrations.

You’re invited to see how the soldiers celebrated the holidays at Fort Dobbs. The Fort Dobbs Winter on the Western Frontier program is free; seasonal refreshments, including hot apple cider, will be offered. Through the day, a dozen historic interpreters at the garrison have scheduled musket- and cannon-firing demonstrations, plus demonstrations of open-fire cooking.

2019 Fort Dobbs Militia Muster French and Indian War Reenactment

Join us for the annual Fort Dobbs Militia Muster French and Indian War Reenactment on June 29-30, 2019 at the Fort Dobbs State Historic Site in Statesville, North Carolina. At the Fort Dobbs Militia Muster, living history interpreters will recreate an 18th century militia muster during a free event at the Fort Dobbs Historic Site. The presentation on Saturday and Sunday will feature musket firing, cooking and other parts of military camp life. Visitors will be invited to join the ranks and learn marching drills each afternoon.

Fort Dobbs Militia Muster French and Indian War Reenactment

Military training was part of life for the citizen soldiers, and the muster re-enactment will portray residents of “Fourth Creek Settlement,” as Statesville then was known. All males ages 16-60 were required by law to serve in North Carolina’s militia during the French and Indian War. These civilians would gather at appointed times during the year to practice military drill and could be used to quickly form an army for defense at times of invasion. Historic interpreters representing the Rowan County militia will offer on-going displays of military camp life, as well as featured musket and cannon firing demonstrations.

Fort Dobbs preserves and interprets the history of the fort and North Carolina’s role in the French and Indian War. It is the only state historic site associated with the war, which lasted from 1754 to 1763.

2019 Fort Dobbs War for Empire French and Indian War Reenactment

Join us for the annual Fort Dobbs War for Empire French and Indian War Reenactment on April 6-7, 2019 at the Fort Dobbs State Historic Site in Statesville, North Carolina. During Fort Dobbs’ largest event of the year, join the soldiers, settlers, and American Indians who inhabited North Carolina’s colonial frontier and learn about their lives and struggles through encampments, trades demonstrations, and tactical demonstrations. The centuries-old animosities between England and France played out in the New World in the French and Indian War (1754-1763). Fort Dobbs State Historic Site will recapture the struggles of that time during the “War for Empire” program, in the largest French and Indian War re-enactment in the Carolinas that also will honor a Cherokee leader.

Fort Dobbs War for Empire French and Indian War Reenactment

Tensions spiraled into war with shifting allegiances among the British, French and dozens of American Indian tribes, principally the Cherokee in western North Carolina. “Fort Dobbs War for Empire French and Indian War Reenactment” will examine the different people living on the North Carolina frontier in the 1750s and offer a glimpse of frontier life.

During our Fort Dobbs War for Empire French and Indian War Reenactment, trade demonstrations will include stone carving, spinning, cooking and woodworking; skills necessary for day-to-day survival. Visitors will meet soldiers, American Indians and civilians from the 18th century as the French and Indian War history is illustrated with re-enactors. Encampments, trades and crafts, musical performances and weapons demonstrations will be entertaining and enlightening as this history comes to life. Battle re-enactments at 1:30 p.m. Saturday and 1:00 p.m. Sunday will be a program highlight. Vendors will offer reproduction period merchandise.

The educational program at this state historic site gives life to North Carolina’s past experiences and traditions and demonstrates the value of living history to students and adults.

2019 Fort Dobbs Cherokee Attack Anniversary Reenactment

Join us for the annual Fort Dobbs Cherokee Attack Anniversary Reenactment on February 23-24, 2019 at the Fort Dobbs State Historic Site in Statesville, North Carolina. Musket and cannon firing demonstrations will be highlights the program at Fort Dobbs State Historic Site commemorating action from the French and Indian War. The Fort Dobbs Cherokee Attack Anniversary Reenactment program will recall the attack on February 27, 1760 on the 30-man garrison at Fort Dobbs that engaged them in a bloody, confusing, night-time skirmish with as many as 70 Cherokee warriors. This living history will give visitors a glimpse of what life was like for the soldiers and settlers seeking protection through on-going displays of camp life, as well as scheduled musket and cannon firing demonstrations.

Fort Dobbs Cherokee Attack Anniversary Reenactment

The Cherokee had been allies of the British in 1754 when the war started, but their allegiance was uncertain and tensions spiraled into war. Living history interpreters will portray provincial soldiers and Cherokee warriors, present musket and cannon firing demonstrations, and demonstrations of 18th century military and America Indian camp life.

The programs will run 9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. Saturday and 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Sunday. A special evening cannon firing will be held Saturday at 6:30 p.m. The educational program at this state historic site gives life to North Carolina’s past experiences and traditions and demonstrates the value of living history to students and adults.

2019 Fort Loudoun Junior Ranger Camp

Looking for young recruits for our annual Fort Loudoun Junior Ranger Camp on July 21-26, 2019 at the Fort Loudoun State Park in Vonore, Tennessee. During this week long camp children learn about what life was like during the French and Indian War by practicing marching and musketry, defending the area from French attacks, learning surgical procedures in the infirmary, trading deer skins for goods, various trades, and much, much more.

Fort Loudoun Junior Ranger Camp runs Monday-Friday, 8:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. It is open to children ages 8-12. Space is limited to 30.

About Fort Loudoun
Fort Loudoun is one of the earliest British fortifications on the western frontier, built in 1756. The fort was reconstructed during the Great Depression and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965. Fort Louton represents a fascinating period in US history. Demonstrations and activities include: battle in the woods, surviving winter on the Niagara Frontier, soldiers’ clothing, bedding and weaponry, winter travel and the Great Lakes fur trade.

Learn about the history of snowshoeing and wear a pair (if there’s snow) to the winter woods battle. Also, learn how to make a fire with flint and steel and practice tinsmithing to make your own ornament. Reenactors will bring history to life all day long. The hands-on activities highlights winter life at the Fort and let you see if you have what it takes to survive a winter garrison in the middle of the 18th century.

2019 Fort Toulouse French and Indian War Encampment

Experience early American history at the annual Fort Toulouse French and Indian War Encampment on April 20-21, 2019 at Fort Toulouse-Fort Jackson Park in Wetumpka, Alabama. The Fort Toulouse French and Indian War encampment focuses attention on daily life at a French frontier fort and Creek village in the year 1756. Soldiers engage in mock battles each day and souvenirs replicating items of the time period will be available from merchants on site. Living history demonstrations of military, Indian and civilian life will take place on Saturday and Sunday throughout the day.

Fort Toulouse French and Indian War Encampment

History comes alive with French Marines, English Troops, Creek Warriors potrayed by living history units from across Alabama and the Eastern United States. The Fort Toulouse French and Indian War Encampment highlights the French and Indian War of 1756-1763, also known as the Seven Years War. French Marines aided by the local Native Americans fought against the English troops for control of the Eastern part of North America.

The public is treated to one of the most exciting living history events in the Southeast. Re-enactors interact with visitors and entertain with skill competitions such as rapid musket fire and bayonet drills and provide insight to their living conditions of the time as well as dress and battle strategies.

2019 Fort Michilimackinac Reenactment Pageant

Don’t miss the 57th Annual Fort Michilimackinac Reenactment Pageant on May 25-27, 2019 at historic Fort Michilimackinac in Mackinaw City, Michigan. The Fort Michilimackinac Reenactment Pageant is a reenactment of the events that took place at Fort Michilimackinac with a story that begins with friendship, respect and cooperative trading between the Native Americans, French and the Voyageurs and Traders. Following the French and Indian War, the Fort comes under the rule of the British, who treat the Native Americans as servants. The great Ottawa Chief Pontiac calls for a war council and devises a blueprint to decimate the British, which includes the playing of an innocent baggataway game. Will Chief Pontiac’s plan succeed? Fort Michilimackinac Reenactment Pageant

The Fort Michilimackinac Reenactment Pageant cast consists of community volunteers who portray British and French Soldiers, Colonial Women and Men, Native Americans and Voyageurs. The Fort Michilimackinac Reenactment Pageant is the longest running free Memorial Day historical program in U.S. More than 400 cast members take part in the three-day Memorial Day weekend pageant that brings to life the 1763 Fort Michilimackinac battle between the French, British, and Native Americans.

The Fort Michilimackinac Reenactment Pageant cast members are clad in period costumes and demonstrate the way of life for residents of Northern Michigan in the 1760s. A highlight of the weekend is the Memorial Day Parade through the streets of Mackinaw City that includes more than 100 bands, acts, and floats.

About Fort Michilimackinac
Fort Michilimackinac was an 18th-century French, and later British, fort and trading post at the Straits of Mackinac; it was built on the northern tip of the lower peninsula of the present-day state of Michigan in the United States. Built around 1715, and abandoned in 1783, it was located along the Straits, which connected Lake Huron and Lake Michigan of the Great Lakes of North America. Present-day Mackinaw City developed around the site of the fort, which has been designated as a National Historic Landmark. The Fort Michilimackinac was relocated to the new Fort Mackinac (don’t get them confused) on Mackinac Island during the American Revolution, with some of the buildings moved across the ice in the winter of 1780-1781. The remaining structures were burnt to the ground.

2019 To Garrison the Fort – Gists Scouts at Fort Frederick F&I War

To Garrison the Fort – Gists Scouts at Fort Frederick F&I War: March 30-31, 2019 at Fort Frederick State Park in Big Pool, Maryland. Experience life at the fort during the French and Indian War as members of the recreated 17th Virginia Company “Gist’s Scouts” garrison the fort. Highlights of the event include musket firing presentations, hearth cooking demonstrations, a uniform and clothing talk and military drills.

Hours: 10:00 am to 4:00 pm Saturday, and 10:00 am to 3:00 pm Sunday. Park entrance fees apply.

Visitors will get a firsthand look at the war which pitted the French and their Indian allies against the British and their Indian allies. Fought between 1756 and 1763, the battle brought destruction to the Maryland frontier, forever changing the landscape of North America. The To Garrison the Fort program allows visitors to travel back in time and participate in the daily activities performed by the soldiers and women stationed at the fort during the French and Indian War.

Highlights of the two-day “To Garrison the Fort” event include:

* Fort Frederick Flag Lowering at 4 p.m.
* Musket Firing at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m.
* Musket Firing at 12:30, 1:30, 2:30, 3:30 and 4:30 p.m.
* Volunteer Company Drill at 1 and 4 p.m.
* Military Music at 12 p.m.
* Join a Ranging Party on patrol 2 p.m.
* Reenactors will also teach visitors how to load a 6-pound cannon at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on both days. (The cannon will not be fired during the program.) Throughout the weekend, a wide variety of living history demonstrations will take place in the barracks.

About Fort Frederick
Fort Frederick was one of the largest frontier fortifications built during the French and Indian War. It occupies an area of 1.5 acres, and it was built to stand up to a major military assault. The fort’s massive stone walls are 4.5 feet thick at the base. Inside the fort, two large barracks buildings face each other across the parade ground. The fort is open and inside the walls you can tour the two barracks buildings. They are furnished with sleeping quarters, workshops and offices, just as they would have been during the mid-18th century.
