Chief Plenty Coups State Park, the venue of the annual Chief Plenty Coups Day of Honor each Labor Day Weekend (Saturday), is a cultural and historical state park located in Pryor, MT within the Crow Indian Reservation, just 35 miles south of Billings. Chief Plenty Coups (Aleek-chea-ahoosh, meaning “many achievements”) was the last traditional chief of the Crow Tribe and his home is now a National Historic Landmark. Upon Chief Plenty Coups’ death in 1932, 190 acres of his land was turned into a public park. This decision was made by Chief Plenty Coups and his wife, Strikes the Iron. The park is a day use park where people can see and walk around his log home, sacred spring, and homestead. There is also a visitor center with exhibits about Chief Plenty Coups and the history of the Crow People as well as a gift shop. There is a 3/4 mile trail around the park along beautiful Pryor Creek. The tranquil, shaded picnic area is a beautiful spot to enjoy lunch and absorb the serenity of this special place.
