Experience living history at the Spring Fort Macon Civil War Reenactment on April 22-23, 2017 at Fort Macon State Park in Atlantic Beach, North Carolina. Reenactors with the 1st North Carolina Volunteers will be spending the weekend at the fort presenting the public with special living history events and programs. Spring Fort Macon Civil War Reenactment events will be held from 10:00 to 4:00 each day and may include flag talks, women’s dress talks, musket drills, and artillery demonstrations. A skirmish scenario will take place at 1:30 on both Saturday and Sunday.<\/p>\n

Crowds will gather at Fort Macon State Park on Saturday and Sunday for the Spring Fort Macon Civil War Reenactment, taking a trip into the past \u2013 back to a time where the North and South were locked in combat and four years of war left more than 600,000 soldiers dead. Spectators will learn about life during the Civil War from the 1st North Carolina Volunteers Civil War Reenactment Regiment.<\/p>\n

Fort Macon Civil War Reenactment Volunteers have spent years preparing for events such as the two-day living history events helf in April, July and September. Talk to them and ask questions. They love to answer the questions of all who are interested in this part of our Nation’s past about which they are so passionate.<\/p>\n

About the 1st North Carolina Volunteers<\/strong>
\nThe 1st North Carolina Volunteers \/ 11th North Carolina Troop has two major goals: to portray the soldiers from NC during the period the period 1861-1865; and to educate the general public about the many dimensions of a soldier’s life and what he might have endured including living conditions, drill, combat, weapons, food, and other aspects of his life from this period. The military units we represent are the 1st North Carolina Volunteers (the Bethel Regiment) and the 11th North Carolina Regiment. This allows flexibility to adapt to any reenactment period and still remain historically correct. 1st NC Volunteers often coordinate their efforts with state and national historic sites and events, such as the Spring Fort Macon Civil War Reenactment.<\/p>\n

About The Battle of Fort Macon in 1862<\/strong>
\nThe Siege of Fort Macon took place from March 23 to April 26, 1862, on the Outer Banks of Carteret County, North Carolina. It was part of Union Army General Ambrose E. Burnside’s North Carolina Expedition during the American Civil War.
\nIn late March, Major General Burnside’s army advanced on Fort Macon, a fort that commanded the channel to Beaufort, 35 miles southeast of New Bern. The Union force engaged the fort with siege works and on April 25 opened an accurate fire on the fort, soon breaching the masonry walls. Within a few hours the fort’s scarp began to collapse, and in late afternoon the Confederate commander, Colonel Moses J. White, ordered the raising of a white flag. Burnside’s terms of surrender were accepted, and the Federal troops took possession of the fort the next morning.<\/p>\n

The 1st NC Volunteers \/ 11th North Carolina Troops wss founded in 1975. This regiment in one of the oldest and continually operating Civil War reenacting units in North Carolina. Members come from all walks of life and reside mainly in the eastern two-thirds of the state. Members are bound by a common interest and admiration of North Carolina’s soldiers from this time period, dedicating themselves to portray them as authentically as possible. Uniforms, weapons, and equipment that have the highest degree of historical accuracy available are used to achieve this goal.<\/p>\n
