Each year, Kaw citizens make the trip to Council Grove from their homes in Oklahoma and elsewhere to be a part of this Kaw Nation Washunga Days Powwow celebration of the tribe&#8217;s historical heritage in the area. The Kaw Nation Washunga Days Powwow in Council Grove honors the last full-blooded Kaw chief, Washunga. It is a celebration honoring the Kaw Indians, the Community, Families, and Friends. The festival takes place each year on the third weekend in June. The three day celebration (powwow is Friday &amp; Saturday) is packed with music, entertainment, a parade, car show, artisans market, food vendors, kid\u2019s games and fun, Kaw Nation Intertribal powwow, fireworks, and so much more! For the Kaw people, the arena is a sacred place. This beautiful, lighted Native American dance venue features state-of-the-art sound technology, and is nestled in the scenic heart of the tribe&#8217;s Allegawaho Heritage Memorial Park. Friday and Saturday evening musical entertainment is scheduled on the Main Stage, starting around 5:30 pm. The Kanza Monument is a 35 foot limestone tower that was erected by Council Grove citizens in 1925 (on the land that would become the park) as a tribute to the memory of the Kanza&#8217;s presence in the Council Grove area. It was prompted by the discovery of Native American remains exposed by erosion in a nearby stream bed.<\/p>\n<p>On April 20, 2002, the Kaw Nation dedicated Allegawaho Heritage Memorial Park &#8211; 168 acres of their native homeland that includes the Monument and one of the three Kaw villages that were occupied from the 1840s to 1872. Stone ruins remain from three of the 138 huts the United States government built as dwellings for the Kanzas in 1862. The Kanzas chose not to live in these structures, using them as stables for their horses instead. After the Kanzas were forced to move to Oklahoma in 1872, settlers lived in these structures until they had built homes. Then the huts served as outbuildings for their farms.<\/p>\n<p>A two mile long Kanza Heritage Trail loops through the Kaw Heritage Park and connects to the Flint Hills Nature Trail.
