Learn about and experience this important period in New Jersey&#8217;s and America&#8217;s Revolutionary War history.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Battle of Bound Brook Living History Weekend activities include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"event2\">\n<li class=\"event2\">Marching, Drilling and Street Battle Reenactments in Bound Brook and South Bound Brook, featuring American and British units portraying the soldiers of the American Revolution.<\/li>\n<li class=\"event2\">18th century Soldiers\u2019 Encampment on the grounds of the Abraham Staats House, 17 von Steuben Lane, South Bound Brook, 08880. Come walk through camp and see what life was like for American and British troops during the time of the American Revolution.<\/li>\n<li class=\"event2\">Historic house tours: The Abraham Staats House, with the original structure c. 1740, was home to the Staats family for nearly 200 years and served as the headquarters for George Washington\u2019s \u201cDrillmaster\u201d Baron von Steuben.<\/li>\n<li class=\"event2\">Presentations and Exhibits at the Abraham Staats House<\/li>\n<li class=\"event2\">Live musical performances and discussions about the music and instruments of the British General Cornwallis, whose army occupied New Brunswick. To rid himself of this interference, Cornwallis organized a surprise attack on Bound Brook with the help of Hessian Johann Ewald, captain of the elite Lieb Jaeger Korps.<\/p>\n<p>At this time, American Major General Benjamin Lincoln was staying in the home of Phillip Van Horne on the Old York Road, now Main Street in Bridgewater, across the street from TD Bank Ballpark and the Bridgewater New Jersey Transit Train Station.<\/p>\n<p>Van Horne is said to have been friendly to both sides during the Revolution, and that Lincoln narrowly escaped out the back door as the British were knocking on the front door.<\/p>\n<p>Lincoln was able to rally his 500 troops to retreat. A band of Continental soldiers fought the British at the Queen&#8217;s Bridge and the Stone Arch Bridge that spanned the Raritan River and the Green Brook. Most of the Americans were able to escape to fight another day, though 60 troops were killed or captured.<\/p>\n<p>One of the key locations for the Battle of Bound Brook reenactment is South Bound Brook&#8217;s Abraham Staats House, which served as the headquarters of Baron von Steuben, the German officer who came to Valley Forge and helped instill discipline and martial skills in the American troops during that bitterly cold encampment in Pennsylvania. He was known as Washington&#8217;s drill master.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"margin-top: 0; margin-bottom: 0px;\"><a class=\"blue\" Over the centuries the house has been expanded several times and now includes a fine late, Federal\/Greek Revival two-story addition.<\/p>\n<p>The house had an interesting history during the American Revolution when it served as the headquarters of General von Steuben during the second Middlebrook Encampment (1779).<\/p>\n<p>The Abraham Staats House was acquired by Borough of South Bound Brook in 1999 with grant assistance provided by Somerset County (the previous owner was given life tenancy). The Abraham Staats House was built c. 1740 near the banks of the Raritan River.  The property is associated with significant people and events during the American Revolution. It is also associated with the growth of the community in the early 19th century, when the Delaware &#038; Raritan Canal was constructed between the house and the river. The house remained a private home until it was acquired by the Borough in 1999. It was placed on the New Jersey and National Registers in 2002.<\/p>\n<p>The Friends&#8217; mission is to support the ongoing care and restoration of the house and its grounds, and to research and interpret the history of the property and its people through such events as the annual Battle of Bound Brook Living History Weekend at the Abraham Staats House held in April.  The goal is to foster an understanding of this history and its relationship to the history of South Bound Brook, surrounding communities, the State of New Jersey and our Country. Those wishing to avail themselves of the services of the British Brigade, Inc. should contact the commanding officer.<\/p>\n<p>We endeavor to portray various aspects of the lives of these men and women by bringing together hundreds of soldiers and camp-followers to educate the public at weekend encampments. A field force of The King&#8217;s Army in British North America can be seen camped in the manner of the British Army of the period. Here one can see tent lined streets filled with men wearing red, blue and green coats performing their daily duties as well as practicing drills and maneuvers.<\/p>\n<p>At least twice a year the Army forms for battle against the Rebel forces where one can see, amid the clouds of powder smoke and crash of musketry, battalions of men maneuvering into action against their foes. The regiment became a 501c3 non-profit organization in 2011. The unit is also partners with the Living History Foundation and the Fort Montgomery Battle Site Association (FMBSA).<\/p>\n<p>The 5th New York Regiment is a dedicated group of living historians based in the Hudson Valley of New York State. We strive to learn and recreate the lives and sacrifices of the original Fifth New York from the Revolutionary War. In a small way we experience what they experienced.
