Join us for the 40th Annual Standing Arrow Powwow on July 13-16, 2017 at the Elmo Powwow Grounds in Elmo, Montana. The Standing Arrow Powwow will bring dancers, drummers, vendors and visitors from many states, including Canada, to Elmo the third weekend in July, when the Kootenai nation and its Kootenai Cultural Committee once again hosts the Standing Arrow Powwow. All nations and the general public are welcome to enjoy the gathering and experience the sights, sounds and smells found only at powwows.<\/p>\n

The large powwow arbor, along with its closeness to Flathead Lake, makes the Standing Arrow Powwow a favorite with many powwow families. Campers, tents and tipis are welcome (tipi poles are provided). People come to powwows for many reasons, some to participate, to enjoy and celebrate their culture. Other come as visitors to get a look at another way of life. Whatever your reason for coming to the Standing Arrow Powwow, you are sure to feel welcome and to enjoy the family friendly event and weekend.<\/p>\n

The fun begins at 11 a.m. and there will be potluck barbecue so Yellowman invited the community to come and bring a dish to share. Tribal health social services will be available to provide information on what they offer. There will be native games and Kootenai language as well as other activities, Yellowman added.<\/p>\n

Facilities: Tipi poles, firewood and showers for campers are provided. For people craving an Indian taco or some frybread and chokecherry jelly, there will be lots of food vendors. Other vendors wlll offer jewelry, beads, clothing and Native crafts.<\/p>\n

\nThe Kootenai share sovereignty on the Flathead Indian Reservation with the Salish and Pend Oreille people. Together they form the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. Culturally, however, they are distinct. The Kootenai or Ktunaxa tongue is a language isolate, unrelated to any language in the world.<\/p>\n

The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes’ Tribal Council established the Kootenai Culture Committee in 1975. The Kootenai Culture Committee is a tribal program that functions independently from the Tribal Organization. The Committee serves to advise the Tribal Council on cultural issues that affect Tribal policy and provide information to assist tribal programs in project development.<\/p>\n

Our Mission is to protect, preserve, perpetuate and enhance the language, culture and traditional lifestyles of the Kootenai people through such events as our annual Standing Arrow Powwow. Most importantly the Kootenai Culture Committee consults and collaborates information with the Kootenai Elders Committee on all issues pertaining to Traditions and Cultures.<\/p>\n

The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes are comprised of the Bitterroot Salish, the Pend d\u2019Oreille and the Kootenai tribes. The Flathead Reservation of 1.317 million acres in northwest Montana is our home now but our ancestors lived in the territory now known as western Montana, parts of Idaho, British Columbia and Wyoming. This aboriginal territory exceeded 20 million acres at the time of the 1855 Hellgate Treaty.<\/p>\n
