This two day event is a commemoration of the 1776 British invasion of New Jersey and the beginning of the Continenttal Army&#8217;s strategic &#8220;Retreat to Victory&#8221; is held each year at Fort Lee Historic Park on the weekend closest to the historic date of November 20. Reenactors from the Brigade of the American Revolution hold a musket demonstration and gun salute followed by a hot cider and donut reception for both reenactors and the public at the adjacent Fort Lee Museum.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Revolutionary Encampment at Fort Lee<\/strong><br \/>\nMembers from over a dozen Living History groups will commemorate the Anniversary of the British Invasion of New Jersey at Fort Lee Historic Park. Re-enactors representing Continentals, Militia, British, Hessian and Loyalist troops will take part in different field and camp activities throughout the weekend. It was north of here around Closter that the British and Hessians crossed the Hudson river and began to head towards patriot positions in force. After being alerted by the Closter rider, the Americans began their retreat from Fort Lee eventually all the way across New Jersey to the Delaware River before Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>The area has been preserved and rebuilt, and while not to revolutionary war specifications it does give the public and reenactor alike a sense of the fortifications built there. Pets are not permitted. Bicycles are not permitted beyond the parking area. At the north end of the Historic Park, two overlooks command spectacular views of the George Washington Bridge, the Hudson River, and the skyline of upper Manhattan. (Restrooms and a drinking fountain are available in season.) In the southern portion of the Historic Park, winding pathways lead past a reconstructed blockhouse to gun batteries and firing steps. Opposite the barbette battery, authentically recreated eighteenth-century soldiers\u2019 and officers\u2019 huts, with a well, woodshed, and baking oven, serve as the focal point for interpretive programs (check our calendar page for details).<\/p>\n<p>The Visitor Center is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 AM \u2013 4:45 PM, with exhibits, gift shop, 150-seat auditorium, restrooms, beverage vending machine, and a water fountain. The regiment became a 501c3 non-profit organization in 2011. The unit is also partners with the Living History Foundation and the Fort Montgomery Battle Site Association (FMBSA).<\/p>\n<p>The 5th New York Regiment is a dedicated group of living historians based in the Hudson Valley of New York State. We strive to learn and recreate the lives and sacrifices of the original Fifth New York from the Revolutionary War. In a small way we experience what they experienced.
