Tours of the fort, infantry and artillery demonstrations, exhibits, music of the period, military parades, and a speech by the Mayor of San Francisco (in 1861) are all part of the day&#8217;s activities. The raising of the garrison flag ceremony takes place soon after the fort opens. Admission is free. Talks and demonstrations will be held throughout the day; reenactors are happy to answer questions about history and various aspects of life during the Civil War.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fusion-video fusion-youtube fusion-aligncenter\" style=\"--awb-max-width:800px;--awb-max-height:492px;--awb-width:100%;\"><div class=\"video-shortcode\"><div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top:61.5%;\" ><iframe title=\"YouTube video player 1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/I3ZprsJLIFo?wmode=transparent&autoplay=0\" width=\"800\" height=\"492\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture;\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center; margin-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 10px;\">Fort Point Living History Day<\/h3>\n<p>This Saturday, the walls of Fort Point will again echo with the sounds of fifes and drums and tramp of boots as this San Francisco landmark celebrates Fort Point Living History Day. Come watch and interact with dozens of reenactors from the American Civil War Association portraying Union soldiers and civilians from the time of the War Between the States at the only Civil War-era brick fort west of the Mississippi.<\/p>\n<p>This is a great family-friendly event that is both fun and educational. It&#8217;s exciting to march into the fort behind the fife-and-drum band, and entering the courtyard to see only reenactors in period dress. If you&#8217;re at all interested in the Civil War or California&#8217;s history, it&#8217;s an event you have to attend.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Schedule of Activities (subject to change):<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"custom3\">\n<li class=\"custom3\">Admission Free<\/li>\n<li class=\"custom3\">Hours: Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.<\/li>\n<li class=\"custom3\">Flag raising ceremony at 10:00 a.m.<\/li>\n<li class=\"custom3\">Infantry drills occur every hour on the hour<\/li>\n<li class=\"custom3\">Artillery discussions occur every hour on the half hour<\/li>\n<li class=\"custom3\">Concurrent demonstrations throughout the day \u2013 1800\u2019s medicine, musician, and civilian<\/li>\n<li class=\"custom3\">Flag lowering ceremony at 4:30 p.m.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Location<\/strong><br \/>\nFort Point<br \/>\n999 Marine Drive at Long Avenue)<br \/>\nSan Francisco, CA 94129<\/p>\n<p>Fort Union, is located at the south anchorage of the Golden Gate Bridge at the end of Marine Drive on the Presidio of San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p>Getting to Fort Point: Cross the Golden Gate Bridge and pass through the toll plaza in the far right lane. Take the exit immediately after the toll plaza and head up Merchant Road. Turn left at the stop sign onto Lincoln Avenue and follow it down the hill to Marine Drive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Parking:<\/strong> Available along the road and in a small lot at the fort. You can also park near the Warming Hut at Crissy Field and walk over to Fort Point. It can be really cold in this old brick fort, even if it&#8217;s sunny out, so dress in layered clothing. Restroom facilities and drinking water can be found outside the fort.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About Fort Point<\/strong><br \/>\nFrom its vantage point overlooking the spectacular Golden Gate, Fort Point defended the San Francisco Bay following California&#8217;s Gold Rush through World War II. Besides Fort Point, their other venues include Duncans Mills and Angel Island, where battles of the Civil War are re-created and camp life is depicted.<\/p>\n<p>If you love history, the American Civil War, camping, family activities, and getting to know a variety of people; the 20th Maine Company G Reenactors may be just the group for you.  Our family of Living Historians love to gather together several times each year to introduce visitors to our camps to an era of history very different from what Hollywood would have you believe.<\/p>\n<p>[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=&#8221;Join the 20th Main Company G Reenactors&#8221;]\nThe American Civil War was one of the most critical and formative periods of our nation&#8217;s history. We all studied it in school. Today, many Americans are still interested in the American Civil War. Some are so fascinated by the events, characters, issues and lifestyles of the time that they desire to experience them and to share that experience with others. If you count yourself among with this interest in the Civil War, perhaps it is time for you to &#8220;Answer the Call&#8221;, &#8220;To Reenact.&#8221; This year over 50,000 Americans will &#8220;Answer the Call&#8221; and reenact the American Civil War.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Annual Events<\/strong><br \/>\nWe have 5 &#8220;Field Events&#8221; each year where we gather for encampments and battle reenactments at various sites throughout Northern and Central California with other members of The American Civil War Association and other reenacting organizations. We also participate in &#8220;Garrison Duty&#8221; at Ft. Point in San Francisco in January and August. We take part in parades, educational presentations and public appearances. In Early Spring, we meet as a company to roll our ammunition and prepare for the up coming season.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>Participation:<\/strong><br \/>\nIndividuals and families are welcome to participate as members of the 20th Maine. Our Cadets must be 12 years of age to go on the battle field. Soldiers must be 14 years of age to participate in battle. Our Cadet Corps provides training and service opportunities for those under 14. There are no &#8220;manditory&#8221; participation requirments. You come when you can and give as much as you can. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Want to Give It a Try?<\/strong><br \/>\nWe invite interested individuals to become a reenactor for a day. We have a limited number of loaner uniforms available and will try to outfit you as best we can. Orientation and training is required for participation so please contact us ahead of time to make arrangements.
