The encampment and reenactment takes place on the actual site of Payne&#8217;s Creek trade store massacre, and of Ft. Chokonikla, which was built shortly after. The park&#8217;s signature Fort Chokonikla Encampment Reenactment event runs from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm on both days with reenactments scheduled at 11:00 am and 2:00 pm.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fusion-video fusion-youtube fusion-aligncenter\" style=\"--awb-max-width:800px;--awb-max-height:492px;--awb-width:100%;\"><div class=\"video-shortcode\"><div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top:61.5%;\" ><iframe title=\"YouTube video player 1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/__Ew6kQD29g?wmode=transparent&autoplay=0\" width=\"800\" height=\"492\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture;\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h3 style=\"ext-align: center; margin-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 10px;\">Battle of the Loxahatchee Reenactment<\/h3>\n<p>The Fort Chokonikla Encampment Reenactment, which is recreated by staff and volunteers, reveals the sequence of events that occurred on July 17, 1849. During the 1840s, tensions between the settlers and Seminole Indians, which had been building over the years, prompted authorities to establish a trading post in Florida\u2019s interior. Built in early 1849, the Kennedy-Darling Trading Post was attacked and destroyed by a small group of renegade Indians later that summer.<\/p>\n<p>In late 1849, Fort Chokonikla was built in close proximity to the trading post as the first outpost in a chain of forts established to control the Seminoles in Florida. The story comes to life through living history narration providing a wonderful learning experience for the entire family.<\/p>\n<p>The Fort Chokonikla Encampment Reenactment features black powder demonstrations, period-specific arts and crafts vendors, and children&#8217;s activities. It is a Florida State Park located on Lake Branch Road one-half mile southeast of Bowling Green, Florida. On November 21, 1978, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, under the title of Payne&#8217;s Creek Massacre-Fort Chokonikla Site.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=&#8221;Read More&#8221;]\nMany early trading posts were built by Kennedy and Darling, two army sutlers from Fort Brooke who had started their own trading company. One such was constructed in the late 1840s along the Charlo-popka-hatchee-chee (Little Trout-Eating Creek in Seminole), west of Peas Creek (later known as the Peace River), near present-day Bowling Green. The proprietors were Capt. George Payne and Dempsey Whidden.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Massacre<\/strong><br \/>\nIgnoring the terms of the treaty with the Seminoles, settlers moved southward, encroaching on the reservation. Though Billy Bowlegs, one of their leaders, was reconciled to the state of affairs, others of his people were not so compliant. On July 17, 1849, Payne and Whidden were killed by five renegade Seminoles, following which the store and everything in it was burned.<\/p>\n<p>Fort Chokonikla &#8211; Site of the old fort<br \/>\nThe attack on the trading post caused many of the settlers to flee to the nearest fort, then ask for military forces to be sent so they could return to their homes in safety. This led to the establishment of Fort Chokonikla near the site of the former trading post only three months later, on October 26. The fort&#8217;s name is believed to derive from the Seminole &#8220;Chocka-nickler&#8221; meaning &#8220;burnt store&#8221;. It was also variously spelled at the time as &#8220;Chokkonickla&#8221; or &#8220;Chokhonikla&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>However, due to its location near a swamp, a breeding site for mosquitos, many of those stationed at the fort contracted and died of malaria. This became such a problem that the fort&#8217;s doctor recommended the fort&#8217;s closure. The principal impression of the Florida Frontier Guards is of Florida miltia or US Volunteer troops of the Second Seminole War of 1835-1842.
