Over 14,000 men and women mustered into service for the Union Army at this site in which 1,480 did not return to Michigan buried in the battle field cemeteries in the South. Historic Fort Wayne is one of a handful of star forts left in the US. The Fort is also one of few remaining sites, in Michigan, where soldiers from the Civil War trained.

About The Historic Fort Wayne Coalition
The Historic Fort Wayne Coalition is dedicated to preserving the history of Michigan men and women who served their country between 1845 and 1973 who either sent material to or personally passed through Historic Fort Wayne as a place of induction to United States military service. We are busy helping the Fort’s caretakers, the City of Detroit Recreation Department with this effort in two major ways. First, we present high quality events that provide ways for the public to enjoy Historic Fort Wayne and see glimpses of how it would have looked when it was garrisoned. Historic Fort Wayne, venue of the annual , was the principal Camp of Instruction for Michigan Volunteer Infantry and Artillery Troops During the Civil War. Fort Wayne was also the site of the billeting and training of Second Michigan Infantry private Franklin Thompson who was actually Sara Edmonds (Seelye), a woman who served disguised as a man for over two years.

[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More about Historic Fort Wayne”]
In 1840, at the point on the Detroit River closest to British Canada, the United States Army began surveying local farms for the placement of a new artillery post. A five point star fort was slated to have the most up to date cannon capable of firing on enemy sailing vessels and the Canadian shore. It would be named for General Anthony Wayne whose defeat of the British at Fallen Timbers in 1796 resulted in United States occupation of the Northwest Territories.

This new fort would be Detroit’s third, yet its first to be built by Americans. Fort Wayne was re-commissioned as an infantry garrison, but held no troops until the outbreak of the Civil War when the first Michigan soldiers reported for duty. Because of the new relationship with Britain, and later Canada, Fort Wayne never saw a shot fired in anger. Instead, the peaceful location became a primary induction center for Michigan troops entering battle in every U. S. conflict from the Civil War to Viet Nam.

Beginning in 1948, the Fort was slowly turned over to the City of Detroit parcel by parcel. Over the next 28 years, the city eventually came to own the entire property with the exception of nine acres still occupied by the Army Corps of Engineers. The property is now under the care of the City of Detroit Recreation Department, along with the assistance of our volunteer organization, Historic Fort Wayne Coalition.

Today you can visit the original 1848 limestone barracks building, 1845 star fort renovated in 1861, the restored Commanding Officers house, the Spanish-American War guard house, an ancient Native American burial mound, and the Tuskegee Airmen Museum. Now and throughout the years ahead, Fort Wayne is returning to prominence with exciting plans in the works. The preservation is underway![/su_spoiler][/su_accordion]

View Historic Fort Wayne Civil War Days Details

View Historic Fort Wayne Colonial Days Details

historic-fort-wayne
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-05-850x567.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-05-850x567-150x150.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-05-850x567-300x200.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-05-850x567-768x512.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-05-850x567-669x272.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-05-850x567-320x202.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-05-850x567-850x400.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-05-850x567-540x272.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-05-850x567-460x295.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-05-850x567-300x214.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-05-850x567-177x142.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-05-850x567-700x441.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-05-850x567-66x66.jpg"},"fusion-200":
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-05-850x567-200x133.jpg"},"fusion-400":
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-05-850x567-400x267.jpg"},"fusion-600":
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-05-850x567-600x400.jpg"},"fusion-800":
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-05-850x567-800x534.jpg
{"@type":"Place
Historic Fort Wayne

Originally built in 1845, Historic Fort Wayne, venue of the annual , was the principal Camp of Instruction for Michigan Volunteer Infantry and Artillery Troops During the Civil War. The restoration and maintenance work pays off when our living historians join fellow reenactors for Coalition sponsored events held throughout the year where visitors are treated to a glimpse of how the Fort looked during different eras of its use.

View Historic Fort Wayne Civil War Days Details

View Historic Fort Wayne Colonial Days Details

historic-fort-wayne-coalition
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-01-850x567.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-01-850x567-150x150.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-01-850x567-300x200.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-01-850x567-768x512.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-01-850x567-669x272.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-01-850x567-320x202.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-01-850x567-850x400.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-01-850x567-540x272.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-01-850x567-460x295.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-01-850x567-300x214.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-01-850x567-177x142.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-01-850x567-700x441.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-01-850x567-66x66.jpg"},"fusion-200":
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-01-850x567-200x133.jpg"},"fusion-400":
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-01-850x567-400x267.jpg"},"fusion-600":
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-01-850x567-600x400.jpg"},"fusion-800":
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Historic-Fort-Wayne-Civil-War-Days-01-850x567-800x534.jpg
{"@type":"Person
Historic Fort Wayne Coalition

The Historic Fort Wayne Coalition was formed in 2004 by a group of individuals who wanted to be a positive force for the restoration and promotion of Detroit\\'s Historic Fort Wayne.
