It began a year long seige on the Fort during which many settlers would die violent deaths. The Shawnee killed or stole all of the settlers livestock and burn their crops. The year of 1777 became known as the “Year of Despair” and one can only imagine the terror and hardships the settlers in the Fort had to endure. But, the Fort held, attack after attack. Had it not, there would have been no Harrods Town, no Harrodsburg and no State of Kentucky.

Fort Harrod was never overrun. At one point they nearly ran out of gun powder which gave rise to the famous “Powder Run” by George Rogers Clark, James Harrod and others to obtain the much needed powder. They were successful and the Fort was saved!

In addition to the Raids reenactment, the Old Fort Harrod Settlement and Raid Reenactment living history, colonial music, cannon fire and Native attacks on the fort. Colonial entertainers will perform all weekend. After the portrayal of this historic battle and what could have been here at Harrod’s Fort the public will be invited to the Native village to watch the adoption ceremonies for the women and children as they could have been carried out if Harrod had fallen. This is a very authentic, educational and entertaining experience that is not to be missed.

Hours: Gate open 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. both days<br built by James Harrod in 1774 is the centerpiece of Old Fort Harrod State Park in Harrodsburg, KY. Cabins and blockhouses are furnished with handmade utensils, furniture, crude tools and implements used by the pioneers. The park complex also features the historic Mansion Museum, George Rogers Clark Federal Monument, Lincoln Marriage Temple, and oldest cemetery west of the Alleghenies.

[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]
History of Fort Harrod
In 1774 pioneer James Harrod led an expedition of 37 men down the Monongahela and Ohio Rivers to the mouth of the Kentucky River. After traveling up the river they guided their boats into a creek called Landing Run. They then traveled overland until they crossed the Salt River in what is present day Mercer County, to a large spring where on June 16, 1774 they established a camp that became the settlement called Harrodstown, the first pioneer settlement in Kentucky. Harrod and his men built cabins and stayed until July when they briefly retuned to Virginia. They returned to stay on March 8, 1775. Within months Harrodstown became a bustling community on the Kentucky frontier. As the community grew, the original fortifications became inadequate. The settlers constructed a new and larger fort on Old Fort Hill, on what is now the site of the park. With the protection of the fort, the community of Harrodstown steadily grew into the town of Harrodsburg, the county seat of Mercer County.

The memory of those early pioneers remained a vivid part of early Kentucky history. A desire to commemorate the bravery and sacrifices of these men, women, and children led to the creation of Old Fort Harrod State Park in 1927. Originally known as Pioneer Memorial State Park, the modern version of the fort was a third smaller and just south of the original structure. The reconstructed fort gives visitors a glimpse of life on the Kentucky frontier. The 22-acre park contains the fort, the Mansion Museum, a Greek Revival house built in 1813, the Lincoln Marriage Temple, a brick structure that houses the cabin where Abraham Lincoln’s parents, Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks, were married, the Pioneer Cemetery, the oldest burial site for Kentucky’s first settlers, and the George Rogers Clark Memorial dedicated in 1934 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to commemorate those pioneers who opened up the western frontier for settlement.

The Mansion Museum contains pioneer books, documents, musical instruments, and tools. There is a room dedicated to the memory of Kentucky native son Abraham Lincoln and the Union cause in Kentucky and a room dedicated to native son Jefferson Davis and the Confederacy.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion]

View Old Fort Harrod Settlement and Raid Details

old-fort-harrod-state-park
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-03-850x567.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-03-850x567-150x150.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-03-850x567-300x200.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-03-850x567-768x512.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-03-850x567-850x400.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-03-850x567-540x272.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-03-850x567-460x295.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-03-850x567-300x214.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-03-850x567-177x142.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-03-850x567-669x272.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-03-850x567-320x202.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-03-850x567-700x441.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-03-850x567-66x66.jpg"},"fusion-200":
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-03-850x567-200x133.jpg"},"fusion-400":
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-03-850x567-400x267.jpg"},"fusion-600":
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-03-850x567-600x400.jpg"},"fusion-800":
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-03-850x567-800x534.jpg
100 S. Friends host a variety of historical events and fundraisers from which all proceeds go to benefit the Fort and the Park and are used to make repairs and improvements or purchase equipment.

Fundraisers include the Park’s annual Settlement and Raid on Old Fort Harrod in June of each year, a re-enactment of the early Shawnee attacks on Fort Harrod. Many Friends members participate in the Settlement and Raid and host concessions. You may become a part of it all!

The Friends of Fort Harrod also sponsor the annual 18th Century Market Fair in November each year. The Market Fair is a group of vendors from all over who assemble in the James Harrod Conference Center to sell their services and wares, all relevant to the pioneer period. 18th Century re-enactors can find just about everything they need here.[/su_spoiler][/su_accordion]

View Old Fort Harrod Settlement and Raid Details

View Old Fort Harrod 18th Century Trade Fair

friends-of-fort-harrod
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-17-900x600.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-17-900x600-150x150.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-17-900x600-300x200.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-17-900x600-768x512.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-17-900x600-900x400.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-17-900x600-540x272.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-17-900x600-460x295.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-17-900x600-300x214.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-17-900x600-177x142.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-17-900x600-669x272.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-17-900x600-320x202.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-17-900x600-700x441.jpg
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-17-900x600-66x66.jpg"},"fusion-200":
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-17-900x600-200x133.jpg"},"fusion-400":
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-17-900x600-400x267.jpg"},"fusion-600":
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-17-900x600-600x400.jpg"},"fusion-800":
https://www.crazycrow.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Old-Fort-Harrod-Settlement-and-Raid-17-900x600-800x533.jpg
{"@type":"Person
Friends of Fort Harrod
<p>The Friends of Fort Harrod is a chartered member of the Kentucky State Parks Foundation and a 501(c)(3) tax exempt, non-profit, public charity.
