Join us for the annual Battle of Droop Mountain Reenactment on October 11-13, 2019. The American Civil War battle reenactment is held on the actual battlefield of the 1864 Battle of Droop mountain, at the Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park located several miles South of the Town of Hillsboro, West Virginia along U.S. highway 219 at the top of Droop Mountain.<\/p>\n

The Droop Mountain Battleground is quiet today. Signs and markers scattered about the park tell stories of a battle fought. Artifacts in a small museum reveal history of both sides of the war. And on the second weekend of October each year, that silence will be shattered by the Battle of Droop Mountain Reenactment. The anniversary reenactment will play out again by host Bryans Battery Reenactment Group and other members of the West Virginia Reenactors Association. The event is open to the public with no admission charge.<\/p>\n

The weekend includes a reenactment scenario tied to historical facts. The Saturday battle reflects the skirmish at Mill Point leading up to Droop Mountain. The Sunday battle will be the Battle of Droop Mountain itself, reenacted on a portion of the actual battlefield. An unscripted tactical exercise covering most of the park grounds is scheduled for Saturday. Authentic Sutlers are welcome at Droop Mountain and there is a pre-registration process (see below form link) along with other Sutler and reenactor participation information.<\/p>\n

Early Bird Registration<\/strong>
\nPRE-REGISTRATION DATES: The Reenactor registration this year will be $10.00 if post marked
\non or before September 1 and $15.00 if post marked after that date or for walk-ons. As usual, Children 12 and under are free, but waiver and registration forms must be completed for them. All minors (under age 18) need parental or guardian signatures.<\/p>\n

Artillery: First 5 Artillery Batteries who pre-register will receive bounties of $75.00 for
\nMountain Howitzers or \u00be scale cannons, and full sized (57 inch wheels) will receive $100.00
\nbounties.<\/p>\n

\"Battle<\/p>\n

About the Battle of Droop Mountain<\/strong>
\nOn November 6, 1863, the federal army of Brigadier General William W. Averell, in his second attempt to disrupt the Virginia-Tennessee Railroad at Salem, Virginia, faced again the Confederate troops of Brigadier General John Echols. Throughout the morning, Echols’ smaller confederate army held the high ground and blocked the highway with artillery, but in the afternoon was overwhelmed by the crushing advance of federal infantry on his left flank. Following the collapse of his lines, General Echols retreated south into Virginia with the remnants of his command.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nFederal Troops occupied Lewisburg on November 7, 1863, but being burdened with prisoners and captured livestock, General Averell elected to return to his headquarters in Beverly, West Virginia, waiting until early December to lead a third and ultimately successful attack on the vital railroad. Operations in the Shenandoah Valley in the spring of 1864 drew remaining confederate troops out of West Virginia, thus leaving the new state securely under the control of the federal government for the remainder of the war.[\/su_spoiler][\/su_accordion]<\/p>\n

In addition to organizing and running two Civil War Reenactments in West Virginia – The Battle of Dry Creek held at the Greenbrier State Forrest near White Sulphur Springs, WV on the 3rd weekend in August each year and the Battle of Droop Mountain held at the Droop Mt. Battlefield State Park near Hillsboro, WV the 2nd weekend each October.<\/p>\n

Bryans Battery also participates in about 6 to 8 other Civil War Reenactments each Year. Although we usually depict the historical Bryans Battery, a Confederate Unit, we also depict an historical Union Artilliary Unit, Keepers Battery.<\/p>\n

\nBryan’s Battery [also called Lewisburg (W. Va.) Artillery] was organized during the summer of 1862. It was organized in Greenbrier and Monroe Counties of what was then Virginia, and now is West Virginia. It served with the Army of Western Virginia and in December contained 4 officers and 116 men. Later the unit was assigned to McCausland’s Brigade, Department of Western Virginia and East Tennessee. It sustained 5 casualties in the fight at Cloyd’s Mountain, and in December, 1864, attached to J.F. King’s Battalion of Artillery, served with Early in the Shenandoah Valley. The battery disbanded during the spring of 1865. Captain Thomas A. Bryan was in command.[\/su_spoiler][\/su_accordion]<\/p>\n
