You may also buy a bale of straw for $3 at registration.<\/li>\n<li class=\"custom3\">Federal troops may unload and set up camp, but the faster you can move your car to the reenactor parking lot, the best for all involved. Let us know if you need to pull up to your campsite due to physical limitations, so that we can make accomodations.<\/li>\n<li class=\"custom3\">CS troops can then drive to their camp site to unload as well.<\/li>\n<li class=\"custom3\">Reenactor parking is at the Ruritan Club on the east side of town.<\/li>\n<li class=\"custom3\">The shuttle will run continuously between the parking lot and the two camps which are only a mile apart. It will start at 1:00pm or as needed, ending at 11:00pm. It can also take those who wish to go, to the top of Crampton&#8217;s Gap.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 class=\"events\">Saturday<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"custom3\">\n<li class=\"custom3\">8:00 a.m. &#8211; 12:00 p.m. Registration open<\/li>\n<li class=\"custom3\">The shuttle will run from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.<\/li>\n<li class=\"custom3\">3:00 p.m. Town Battle begins; Main Street and alleys will be closed to traffic).<\/li>\n<li class=\"custom3\">5:00 p.m. Roads reopen as the battle ends on the Arnold farm, which is a short walk to the St. Paul&#8217;s Recreation Center where a hot cooked dinner will be served!<\/li>\n<li class=\"custom3\">Dinner Menu: Ham, Boiled Potatoes, Baked Beans, Green Beans, Applesauce, Biscuits &amp; Butter, Iced Tea &amp; Lemonade. Bring some money for home-made desserts! (Proceeds go to cancer research)<\/li>\n<li class=\"custom3\">There will be entertainment during dinner and it is another opportunity to view the museum at the German Reformed Church.<\/li>\n<li class=\"custom3\">5:30 p.m. Shuttle starts again from 5:30 p.m. &#8211; 10:00 p.m.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Sunday<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"custom3\">\n<li class=\"custom3\">8:00 a.m. Federal Troops will start being transported to the Arnold farm for a tactical.<\/li>\n<li class=\"custom3\">9:00 a.m. Tactical begins<\/li>\n<li class=\"custom3\">10:00 a.m. Tactical will end and the shuttle Hamilton Willard Shafer Farm House is located in Burkittsville, Maryland and is a federally recognized 501(c)3 developed for the preservation of the Town of Burkittsville. The farm was headquarters to the Union during the Civil War Battle of South Mountain in 1862 but has recently seen a variety of destruction from weather and other inhabitants occupying the space illegally. We ask for public support to help preserve this special place in Maryland.<\/p>\n<p>Burkittsville is a small rural town steeped in history and left virtually unchanged over the past 100 years. Some of its structures date back to the 1740s, when it was a trading village. It eventually developed into an agricultural support village for the farming community. Local craftsmen, iron and leather workers, cabinet shops, general stores and physicians were available in Burkittsville. The town is surrounded by some of the richest agricultural land in Frederick County. The fields were covered in grain crops especially rye which was used to produce some of Maryland\u2019s finest rye whiskey.<\/p>\n<p>The Civil War was brought to a quiet valley when Gen. Robert E. Lee crossed into Maryland in an attempt to influence Maryland to secede and to demonstrate to the Federal Government the South\u2019s ability to move an army and threaten Washington. Lee crossed the Potomac and moved into Frederick City looking for local support. Realizing Lee\u2019s move into Maryland, McClellan, who had been put back in charge of the army, moved from Washington to Frederick to confront Lee. Lee move west into the Middletown Valley and McClellan followed. Lee blocked the South Mountain Passes, Turners, Foxes and Crampton\u2019s Gap. Crampton\u2019s Gap is just above the Town of Burkittsville and the road to the pass runs through Burkittsville.<\/p>\n<p>The first full engagement of the Confederate and Federal armies took place in the Middletown Valley. Burkittsville had to play its role as it lay between the opposing armies. Nearly 2000 Confederates led by Howell Cobb and nearly 13,000 Federal soldiers under the command of Gen. Wm. B. Franklin fought in Burkittsville and the surrounding area. They commandeered buildings, some used as surgeries, saw substantial damage as did many private residences. Gen. Wm. B. Franklin commandeered the Shafer farm (Hamilton Willard Shafer) to view the progress of his army in taking Crampton\u2019s Gap, but due to the delay in taking that Gap and not having provided relief in Harper\u2019s Ferry from an attack by Stonewall Jackson, he was sent to Sharpsburg along the Antietam Creek. I (116th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Co.I Reenactors), Irish Brigade (Reenactors), began as simply &#8220;The Irish Brigade&#8221; in April, 1976, an off-shoot of another seminal reenacting unit known as &#8220;Sherman&#8217;s Bummers,&#8221; beginning as early as 1965. By 1982 reenacting had evolved to the point as to make it necessary to take on a designation more realistic to the unit&#8217;s size. Co. I, 116th PVI was the sole Irish Brigade company from Pittsburgh, and most of our men being from that city, that designation was chosen. Authentic reenacting owes a great debt to both Sherman&#8217;s Bummers and the early Irish Brigade, they being some of the first to dress in authentic uniform, drill properly and present the most realistic period camp-sites.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=&#8221;Read More&#8221;]\nMuch like the Irish Brigade toward the end of the Civil War, the spirit that has driven our company is reverently guarded by a small number of devoted men, and not likely to disappear in the perceptible future. After so many years, revered traditions of our own have become established, such as the St. Patrick&#8217;s Day Parade and Annual Meeting in March, in November the Gettysburg Remembrance Day Parade and ceremonial gathering at the Irish Brigade monument, honoring not only the dead of the original Irish Brigade of the Civil War, but those on our own Roll of Honor. Christian Anders, the Southern Division plans to organize one to two events per year and participate in another event per year as a division to provide the members with a variety of experiences.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=&#8221;Read More&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"blue\" target=\"_New\"><strong>Join The Southern Division<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\n(scroll down in window to use online form)<\/p>\n<p>Members of the Southern Division have organized the following events over the last 10 years: McDowell, Assault on Allegheny, Morton&#8217;s Ford, Shenandoah &#8217;62, September Storm, Boys of &#8217;61, Fire on the Mountain, To the Gates of Washington,<br \/>\nBedford Officer Schools, At High Tide, Burkittsville 1862, Bedford Artillery School, Down the Valley, War on the James, Girding for War,<br \/>\nOctober &#8217;62<\/p>\n<p>Members of the Southern Division have raised more than $600,000 for battlefield and historic preservation through various events over the past decade. For example, since 1999, member units raised $65,200 to restore the battle flags of the 6th, 26th, 47th, 52nd, and 58th North Carolina regiments in the North Carolina Museum of History collection, as well as Banners in the Tennessee State Museum.
