But, there are a few things that first timers should learn to expect. Most instructions will come from the announcer so make sure you\u2019re paying attention. Certain parts of a powwow ask the public to stand for events such as the grand entry, flag song or honor songs. Some dances, like intertribals and round dances, are open to the public and some are not. The announcer will inform the public when they can enter the arena to participate in a dance. Cameras are allowed and welcome, but occasionally you\u2019ll be asked not to photograph certain events and if you\u2019d like to stop a dancer and take a picture with them, the proper thing to do is to ask their permission first. The dancer\u2019s outfit is commonly referred to as \u201cregalia\u201d and for Powwow dancers this is a way of life and not a show for the public so respect for their regalia is also key. Friends, family and new people come together to sing, dance, share food, present their craftwork and socialize. These cultural events preserve Native American traditions and heritage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is a Veteran\u2019s Powwow?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe respect shown to veterans is an integral part of the Native American culture. Native Americans have a rich history in the United States Military. The veterans of today are shown the same honor and respect as the warriors of times past. At Veterans Powwows, Native and non-Native veterans alike are especially venerated for their service.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019m not Native American, are Powwows for me?<\/strong><br \/>\nYes! Powwows are at their core family and community events and we want to share our culture and traditions with you!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why are there Head Judges?<\/strong><br \/>\nPowwows added dance competitions as part of the celebration which began decades ago; where exceptional dancers were recognized with \u201cprizes\u201d like blankets and quilts. This tradition evolved to awarding money as the prize and has since become part of the celebration. Modern day Powwows like our Veteran\u2019s Powwow invite dancers to come and celebrate, but also to have the chance to showcase their skills and compete against one another which adds to the excitement of the event. Head judges are respected dancers hired by the Powwow committee to oversee the dance competition and insure fair judging of the dancers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is an Arena Director?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Arena Director is the individual responsible for keeping track of the singers, dancers and dance competitions and any other live events happening during the Powwow. The Arena Director works with the announcer to keep the Powwow organized and well-coordinated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is the Grand Entry?<\/strong><br \/>\nEach powwow begins with a Grand Entry or procession of dancers serving as the &#8220;bringing together of tribes.&#8221; Dancers enter the dance circle by age and style of regalia. They are guided by two lead dancers, a male and a female, who follow the presentation of flags. Similar to the National Anthem, the Flag Song is the Native American way of honoring traditional native, state, and American flags. It serves as a major resource on the histories and cultures of Native Americans in the northeast and on the region&#8217;s rich natural history.<\/p>\n<p>The Museum is a 308,000-square-foot complex, consisting of permanent exhibits, the Mashantucket Gallery (a gallery for temporary exhibits), classrooms, a 320-seat auditorium, a restaurant, a museum shop and administrative offices. The Research Center houses collections, archives, and archaeology and conservation laboratories where ongoing work from the field is evaluated and studied.<\/p>\n<p>Multi-sensory dioramas and exhibits introduce visitors to the history of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe and the natural and cultural history of the eastern woodlands. Films and videos, interactive programs, archival materials, ethnographic and archaeological collections, commissioned art, and traditional crafts by Native artisans are featured in the exhibits.<\/p>\n<p>The building is designed to interact with its surrounding environment while maintaining the ecological integrity of the area. It embraces the tree line and is nestled into the landscape; two of the five levels of the facility are below ground. A 185-foot, stone-and-glass tower provides visitors with sweeping views of the swamp and region. The large, circular, glass-and-steel Gathering Space serves as an arrival area. The restaurant features a variety of Native American cuisines, and the museum shop specializes in contemporary Native American arts and crafts.[\/su_spoiler][\/su_accordion]<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"margin-top:15px;
