Celebrate an 18th Century Christmas at Fort Boonesborough on December 6-7, 2019 at Fort Boonesborough State Park in Richmond, Kentucky. Visit the Fort to see and hear the differences in the holiday celebrations of the season during the early settlement of Kentucky. During the 18th Century Christmas at Fort Boonesboro the Fort will be lighted by candlelight, with decorations in keeping with the traditions of the time.<\/p>\n

There will be Living History interpretations of the traditions of various ethnic groups and nationalities during the season. Candle lanterns, bonfires, the Christmas Guns, food and refreshments, music and dance, will all add to the atmosphere. Refreshments are included! 18th Century Christmas at Fort Boonesborough is a special program sponsored by the Fort Boonesborough Foundation.<\/p>\n

About Fort Boonesborough<\/strong>
\nRichard Henderson, founder of the Transylvania Company in 1775, chose Daniel Boone to head a party of 31 axe men to clear a path through the Cumberland Gap that would run from Long Island of the Holston River, Tennessee, to Otter Creek of the Kentucky River. Blazing the trail presented extraordinary difficulties \u2013 the route through the wilderness was a hunter\u2019s trace that was too narrow for a wagon. The task was to combine The task was to combine many trails into one continuous route by clearing underbrush and overhanging foliage. When Daniel Boone and his men reached the Kentucky River on April 1, 1775, they quickly moved to establish Kentucky?s second settlement–the site still known as Fort Boonesborough.<\/p>\n

For some stretches however, it meant using axes and tomahawks to clear trees for a new section of trail. It was very expeditiously but roughly done. For decades afterwards, the Wilderness Trail was generally conceded to be the roughest, most disagreeable road on the continent, but was one of the major factors in the opening of the Middle West to colonization. A determined Boone and his loyal followers forged ahead until they reached the settlement site \u201cabout 60 yards from the river, and a little over 200 yards from a salt lick.\u201d On the first of April, 1775, Boone and his woodsmen began the construction of several temporary log huts that were immediately dubbed \u201cFort Boone\u201d.<\/p>\n

Also visit the Event Schedule Page for a listing of special events at the fort.\u00a0Visitors to the Fort can walk the grounds, see a short film in the orientation center and visit with the interpreters inside the cabins as they go about their various activities.\u00a0Visitors can also shop in the 18th Century Transylvania Store. The Campground is situated down near the original fort site and offers a campground store for g[\/su_spoiler][\/su_accordion]<\/p>\n
