The two-day event brings together history enthusiasts and curious spectators to raise money and awareness of the fort’s history.

La Salle and his men built the original fort in 1680 while constructing a boat to travel the Mississippi River. According to historians, the fort was burned down. The exact location of the original fort has been the subject of great debate since Peoria was founded. A reconstructed fort now commemorates Illinois’ first European-built structure.

Twice a year in spring and fall, the not-for-profit Fort Crevecoeur, Inc. holds Rendezvous Days as a main fundraiser to maintain the fort and surrounding park. But the primary goal of the event is to give people a taste of life in the old days, Hanse said.

Men and women dressed as traders and Native Americans sold items like arrowheads, walking sticks and beaded jewelry. Tents and tepees dotted the park and participants demonstrated trades like old-fashioned rope making and knife crafting.

Location
Fort Crevecoeur Park
301 Lawnridge Dr,
Creve Coeur, IL 61610
Phone:(309) 694-3193

Contact
Fort Crevecoeur Park Office
309-694-3193

About Fort Crevecoeur Park
Fort Crevecoeur Park is located near Peoria and includes a reconstructed Fort Crevecoeur (about nine miles from the original location), a museum and a campground. French explorer Robert de La Salle (1643-87) helped the Peoria Indians build a fort in 1860 to defend themselves against the Iroquois. LaSalle made a deal with the local tribes to protect them from the Iroquois tribal league. LaSalle fostered good relationships with the tribes—Fort Creve Coeur wasn’t around too long though—this original site quickly became abandoned as Tonti left to fortify Starved Rock. Tonti’s mission to Starved Rock was to only end in failure though. However, the Fort Crevecoeur’s seven man garrison quit their fort, destroyed the fortifications, and made a trek to Canada.

Mark your calendar today so you won’t miss the next Fort All of these rendezvous ultimately included a major transfer of furs and goods to be traded for furs. In North America during the fur trade era, from the 16th century to the mid-19th century, this included the Voyageur Rendezvous and the Mountain Man or Buckskinner Rendezvous. Comparably speaking, the Rocky Mountain Man Rendezvous had a very short life-span, from 1825-1840. On the other hand, French Traders were active in the Great Lakes area as early as the 16th century, with voyageur rendezvous activity in the Grand Portage, Minnesota area between the 1730s and 1805.

The French started trading in furs in North America in the 16th century, the English established trading posts on Hudson Bay in present-day Canada in the 17th century, and the Dutch had trade by the same time in New Netherland. The 19th-century North American fur trade, when the industry was at its peak of economic importance, involved the development of elaborate trade networks and companies.

This fur trade became one of the main economic ventures in North America attracting competition among the French, British, Dutch, Spanish, and Russians. Indeed, in the early history of the United States, capitalizing on this trade, and removing the British stranglehold over it, was seen as a major economic objective. Many Native American societies across the continent came to depend on the fur trade as their primary source of income. By the mid-1800s, however, changing fashions in Europe brought about a collapse in fur prices. The American Fur Company and some other companies failed.

In canoe-based fur trade areas, one type of rendezvous is associated with the voyageur and canoe-based fur trade business which was largely in Canada and the states in the US around the Great Lakes, especially in Minnesota and Wisconsin. These Voyageur Rendezvous were generally at a transportation transfer point within in a wilderness route that could not be traversed in one season run by and including the fur trade of only a single company. The transfer was the dominant reason for holding the rendezvous although they included other meetings and revelry.

Rendezvous held in the western part of what is now the United States included a more diverse range of activities than their northern counterparts. Such a rendezvous might include several fur trading companies, and array of fur traders, mountain men and native Americans. A substantial amount of deal-making and trading occurred at these rendezvous. These were often a temporary "town" of sorts with businesses which offered the fur trade workers and participants ways to spend their money on supplies and revelry. The North American fur trade in the west is identified with these large annual Mountain Man rendezvous that were held in various Rocky mountain locations from 1825 until 1840. One of the largest of these was the Rendezvous of 1832. Much of the attendance of these consisted of mountain men who were fur trade participants who were experienced at living in the mountain back country.

Fort Crevecoeur hosts spring and fall rendezvous and a French and Indian War Reenactment each year. The park itself is an eighty-nine acre park with a thirty-nine acre dedicated Nature Preserve, the remaining fifty-nine acres are governed as a Nature sanctuary. We have water and electric hookups available as well as access to a dump station, which is situated at the back of the camp ground.

Fort Crevecoeur – built in 1680

On January 5, 1680, eight canoes passed through the Narrows of the Illinois River above Peoria and came upon the Peoria Indians, camped on both sides of the Pimiteoui Lake. With LaSalles’ canoe on the right and Tonti’s on the left, the eight canoes formed a line to cover the width of the river, signalling the Indians that they came in peace. The Indians were frightened at first, but, upon realizing that the white men meant no harm, welcomed them with a feast of bear meat, buffalo fat, and porridge. LaSalle paid the Indians for the corn taken from their village at Starved Rock, presented the chiefs with gifts of axes and tobacco, and smoked the calumet pipe. The Indians rubbed the bare feet of the priests with bear’s grease to stimulate their fatigued muscles.

That night, the Peoria Indians were visited by Monsoela, a chief of the Maskouten nation, who, accompanied by a party of Miami Indians and their enemies, the Iroquois. Frightened by the sudden change in attitude on the part of the Peoria Indians, six of LaSalles’ men deserted the camp the following day.

Fort Crevecoeur
In order to reassure the Indians, LaSalle agreed to help defend them against the Iroquois. The Illinois River had frozen over during the night, but as soon as the river began to thaw, LaSalle and his men began the building of Fort Crevecoeur one league downstream and across the river from the Pimiteoui Village.

Fort Crevecoeur’s Destruction
On April 15, Tonti left Fort Crevecoeur with Father Ribourde and two other men to begin fortification of Starved Rock. The following day, the remaining seven men at Fort Crevecoeur pillaged the fort of all ammunition and provisions, destroyed it, and fled back to Canada.

Two of the men who had been at the fort joined Tonti at Starved Rock and told him of the fort’s destruction. Tonti sent messengers to LasSalle in Candada to tell him what had happened and returned to Fort Crevecoeur to collect those tools that had not been destroyed and take them to the Kaskaskia Village at Starved Rock.

On the tenth of September, 1680, six hundred Iroquois warriors, armed with guns, came upon the Kaskaskia village. Both the Iroquois and the Illinois Indians accused Tonti of treachery. He tried to mediate their differences and detain the Iroquois until the old people, women and children could flee the village. Tonti was wounded by an Iroquois who stabbed him with a knife, the Kaskaskia village was burned, and the Iroquois built a fort on the site.
