Relive an authentic War of 1812 encampment at the 198th Annual Muster on the Wabash on November 3-4, 2018 in Vincennes, Indiana. Witness the confrontation between Governor William Henry Harrison (later 9th U.S. President) and Shawnee Leader Tecumseh. Experience the daily battle, patrol with Harrison’s troops, gentlemen’s duel, cannon, rifle and musket demonstrations and children’s activities while strolling the grounds of historic Fort Knox II. Canceled for 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n

Muster on the Wabash<\/h4>\n

The encampment, presented by the Vincennes State Historic Sites, takes place on the site of the former historic Fort Knox II, just 3 miles north of Vincennes next to Ouabache Trails County Park.<\/p>\n

More than 150 re-enactors, including militia, U.S. Infantry soldiers and American Indians, will demonstrate what life was like in the early 1800s. Pioneer crafts such as woodworking, tinsmithing, blacksmithing and wool spinning will be exhibited.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t miss crowd favorites such as the patrol with Harrison\u2019s troops, the Tecumseh-Harrison confrontation and a battle each day.<\/p>\n

Food and period vendors complete the atmosphere at Muster on the Wabash in portraying early Vincennes history. Fort Knox II was built in 1803, three miles north of Vincennes on the Wabash River. In 1810, Captain Zachary Taylor strengthened the fort and Shawnee Leader Tecumseh visited it. In 1811, Indiana Territorial Governor William Henry Harrison “mustered” his troops here before the Battle of Tippecanoe. The fort’s stockade is marked with short posts and interpretive signs.<\/p>\n

Fort Knox II, location of the annual Muster On The Wabash War of 1812 reenactment, was an important military outpost used by the Us Army from 1803 to 1813. Captain Zachary Taylor strengthened Fort Knox with a stockade in 1811. Governor William Henry Harrison “mustered” (assembled) his army at Fort Knox II and marched up the Wabash River to the Battle of Tippecanoe at Prophetstown (near present-day Lafayette, Indiana.) on Nov. 7, 1811.<\/p>\n

In the early 1800s, there was an army garrison located in Vincennes, the oldest city in the state, and the seat of Knox County. Local residents began complaining that the soldiers were spending too much time in the local saloons. So, in 1803 the garrison was moved to a site north of town. The new site was on a bluff with a commanding view of the strategic Wabash River. Since it was located in Knox County, the 42 acre site became known as “Fort Knox II.”<\/p>\n

By 1809, Vincennes became the center of military activity for the Indiana Territory. As increasingly dangerous situations developed between the settlers and the Native American Indian population, more soldiers were brought to the Fort, which was under the command of Captain Zachary Taylor.<\/p>\n

In 1811, Territorial Governor William Henry Harrison used the fort as a staging area for troops as he prepared for the Battle of Tippecanoe. Afterwards, Fort Knox II also became a hospital for wounded soldiers from that battle, who where floated down river from Fort Harrison in Terre Haute.<\/p>\n

Over time, three forts were built at the site to protect settlers and help control activity on the Wabash River. Spirit of Vincennes Inc coordinates reenactors for local history events such as Spirit of Vincennes Rendezvous. It hosts three reenactment events each year. Spirit of Vincennes Inc is a non-profit organization dedicated to historic preservation and education in Vincennes and Knox County, Indiana, US. The group awards scholarships to graduates from each of the Knox County high schools, and presents a “Long Knife” award to individuals who help promote the history of Knox County.<\/p>\n

The Spirit of Vincennes Rendezvous is an annual reenactment held on Memorial Day weekend at the French Commons, adjacent to the George Rogers Clark National Historical Park in Vincennes. It is also hosted by the Northwest Territory Alliance (NWTA), and the George Rogers Clark National Historical Park. The event was started in the 1970s, and is intended to introduce visitors to life along the frontier in late 18th and early 19th century Vincennes, particularly during the American Revolution. According to its webpage, the rendezvous may attract 400 to 500 reenactors and 35,000 visitors.<\/p>\n

The Northwest Territory Alliance (NWTA) is an American Revolutionary War reenactment organization located in the Midwestern United States. We have over five hundred members from states as far west as Iowa, east to Ohio, north to the Canadian border and south to Tennessee.<\/p>\n
