This annual special event brings the history of the American Civil War to life. Held the last weekend in September, Wade House Civil War Weekend is two action-filled days of battle re-enactments, military drills, medical care situations, period music and food, demonstrations, and more. The weekend spectacle involves more than 500 reenactors. Interact, explore and engage your entire family in the experience.<\/p>\n<p>Experience the 1860s clash of arms and watch Union and Confederate troops set up camp, conduct drills and offer a variety of demonstrations. In addition to the programs listed below, you&#8217;ll also have the opportunity to participate in special hands-on activities and attend presentations on civilian issues, women&#8217;s issues, medical field hospitals, and Civil War era music.<\/p>\n<p>In a scene reminiscent of the summer of 1861, watch with other spectators as hundreds of soldiers \u2014 cavalry, infantry and artillery \u2014 struggle across the field in a conflict depicted with startling accuracy and passion. In between the action, visitors can access the battlefield for an up-close look at the men, horses and equipment. Participants must also have already checked in at re-enactor registration. No participant who has consumed alcohol in the previous three hours or who appears to be intoxicated or under the influence of controlled substances shall be on the battlefield, in battle formation, handle a weapon, or ride a horse. No re-enactor vehicles are allowed in the camp areas once the event begins. The speed limit is ten (10) miles per hour on site roads. Please remember there will be children, animals, and equipment on site, as well as many sharp turns. Parking vehicles in a hidden area \u201cbehind the trees\u201d or anywhere else on-site is not allowed. Parking at the far north end of the battlefield is NOT allowed! Do not leave your car parked on any gravel road!<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0 0 0 25px;\">Quiet time will be observed between 10:00 pm and dawn. Failure to adhere to this policy will result in dismissal from the event. No generators will be allowed in any camp during this period.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0 0 0 25px;\">Wade House Civil War Weekend reenactors, other than approved vendors, may not sell or give food to the public.<br \/>\nFood is NOT to be sold in the battlefield area except by approved vendors.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0 0 0 25px;\">Anyone wishing to sell items to the public or reenactors must be registered as a Sutler.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0 0 0 25px;\">Campfires are allowed in designated camp areas only. No fires are allowed in the Sutler area (see map). Reenactors are responsible for tending and keeping fires properly banked. Campfires must be drenched and sod replaced before leaving on Sunday. Please restack unused firewood in the location where you found it. Except to properly bank campfires, please do not dig holes anywhere on Wade House grounds.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0 0 0 25px;\">Cutting of trees and saplings is prohibited.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0 0 0 25px;\">Sutlers must break down any cardboard boxes before leaving the site.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>[\/su_spoiler][\/su_accordion]\n[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=&#8221;Military Safety and Conduct Guidelines&#8221;]<\/p>\n<ol style=\"padding: 0;\">\n<li style=\"margin: 0 0 0 25px;\">Do not bring bullets, live projectiles or live ammunition to the event. No loading blocks or musket balls. No ramrods are allowed to be pulled for loading during the battle scenarios.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0 0 0 25px;\">All weapons must pass commanders\u2019 safety inspections both days before<br \/>\nbeing taken onto the battlefield and fired. Firearms will be discharged only in designated areas.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0 0 0 25px;\">Artillery units must set up on the battlefield by 9 am each morning. Vehicles are prohibited from pulling cannons on or off the field during the hours the public is<br \/>\nonsite. Artillery pieces may not be pulled back to camp with a modern vehicle until<br \/>\nthe camps have closed to the public.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0 0 0 25px;\">Only full-sized artillery pieces are allowed. Carriages must have 57 inch wheels. No mortars or mountain howitzers are allowed.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0 0 0 25px;\">Artillery pieces must participate in the battle both days to qualify for a bounty. Demonstration pieces do not qualify for bounties.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0 0 0 25px;\">All scenarios must be approved by the U.S. and C.S. Commanders before the reenactment. Unscripted hand-to-hand combat is prohibited. Do not point firearms at any person.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0 0 0 25px;\">You must provide adequate supervision of powder stores. Powder, charges, cartridges, and primers must be stored in special containers at a safe distance from<br \/>\ncampfires.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0 0 0 25px;\">Participants under age 14 may not carry or fire black powder weapons of any kind. Participants 14 and 15 years of age may carry black powder weapons with a parent or guardian. Children and civilian reenactors are not permitted on the field during re-enactments, except for functional musicians (boys 14 or older who can actually play a drum, fife or bugle). Boys under 14 are not to serve as color bearers during battle re-enactments. Civilian reenactors may request prior written approval from Wade House event coordinator, Jim Willaert, before the event to participate in battle re-enactments.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0 0 0 25px;\">Mounted cavalry units must station at least one unit member near their unit\u2019s horses when public visitors are in camp. Horses will be inspected by cavalry commanders for health problems before being allowed to participate. According to the Wisconsin Department of Health, horses are not allowed within 500 feet of food concession areas.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0 0 0 25px;\">There will be no unscripted \u201ctactical\u201d combat of any type during the event. Firearms will not be discharged at any time after sundown. If you would like to plan a scenario that will not take place on the battlefield, please contact the event coordinator.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0 0 0 25px;\">No modern weapons are allowed. Only black powder weapons, appropriate to the Civil War era may be brought onto the premises.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>[\/su_spoiler][\/su_accordion]\n[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=&#8221;Authenticity Guidelines&#8221;]<\/p>\n<ol style=\"padding: 0;\">\n<li style=\"margin: 0 0 0 25px;\">Military and civilian reenactors should strive for as high a degree of<br \/>\nauthenticity as possible.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0 0 0 25px;\">Camps will be classified as Military and Military Dependent\/Civilian.<br \/>\nMilitary Camps (Union and Confederate): Camping areas will be provided for traditional company\/battalion streets. Campaign-style camping is also encouraged.<br \/>\nMilitary Dependent\/Civilian Camp: For military\/civilian personnel who wish to camp authentically with friends and family. This camp will have Union and Confederate sections.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0 0 0 25px;\">Chain of Command: Wade House Historic Site, through its Director, David<br \/>\nWarner, and Curator of Interpretation and Collections, Jim Willaert, will ultimately be responsible for all aspects of the event. The Union military commander will be responsible for Union activities on the battlefield. The Confederate military commander will be responsible for Confederate activities on the battlefield. Names of these commanders will be released to pre-registered participants in advance of<br \/>\nthe event.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0 0 0 25px;\">Period camping may be set up in designated areas only. Modern tents are not allowed on the grounds during the event with the exception of the Boy Scout camp. Camping in structures other than period-appropriate tents must be pre-approved by Wade House. This includes historic vehicles.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0 0 0 25px;\">Camp furniture used during the event should be of period style and kept to a minimum. Blankets, quilts and other bedding used during the public hours of the event should be appropriate for the Civil War period, in general use by the common person in mid-war. Visible containers and utensils should be of the proper type common to general period usage. Please restrict lighting devices to candles and period appropriate oil lamps. Smoking during public hours is limited to pipes, cigars and period cigarettes.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0 0 0 25px;\">Please keep modern coolers and modern equipment hidden during the public hours of the event. Televisions, portable radios, boom boxes, music devices, and propane lanterns are prohibited. Cell phone use is restricted to emergencies only (or out of sight of the public). Modern cameras and video recorders may not be carried onto the battlefield or used during a battle re-enactment. Please use cameras discreetly in the camps during public hours.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0 0 0 25px;\">Do not use obvious 21st century adornments in your personal impression,<br \/>\nincluding sunglasses, wristwatches, or other modern jewelry. The Wade House Site Director and his designees reserve the right to correct these faults. Anyone who has such an obvious unauthentic presentation will be asked to correct this immediately. Failure to comply will mean dismissal from the event.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0 0 0 25px;\">All military personnel and civilian participants should be attired in<br \/>\nappropriate historic clothing during the event. All participants must maintain 1860s impressions from 9 am \u2013 5 pm Saturday and 9 am &#8211; 4 pm on Sunday. Wade House will not exclude women from participating as soldiers during the event. However, all soldiers will have to pass inspection in order to participate in drills and battles. House Historical Site, also called Old Wade House, is a 240-acre (97 ha) open-air museum in Greenbush, Wisconsin. A Wisconsin historic site, the site is operated by a Wisconsin Historical Society. The site contains nine structures, three of which are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The namesake structure is the Sylvanus Wade House constructed in 1848\u20131849. Live historic interpreters, wearing period style clothing, populate the park during summer operations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wade House History<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Wades were the first permanent settlers in Greenbush. They came to the remote area not to carve a single homestead out of the wilderness, but to establish a village on the developing frontier.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wades Establish Village in Frontier Territory<\/strong><br \/>\nIn 1844 Sylvanus and Betsey Wade and their family settled in what was to become Greenbush. At that time Wisconsin was a frontier territory. The land between Fond du Lac and Sheboygan was a wilderness of virtually uninterrupted forest. Years later, Betsey Wade would tell her children that the forest was so dense that, even on a clear night, she &#8220;could hold in her apron all the stars she could see.&#8221;[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=&#8221;Read More&#8221;]\nThe Wades were the first permanent settlers in Greenbush. They came to the remote area not to carve a single homestead out of the wilderness, but to establish a village on the developing frontier.<\/p>\n<p>Sylvanus and Betsey Wade selected the location for their village carefully. They chose a place halfway between Sheboygan and Fond du Lac along a well-used stagecoach trail. The Mullet River crossed the trail, offering a promising source of water power. The Wades purchased several sections of land around a potential mill site as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wade House Stagecoach Hotel Opens, 1850<\/strong><br \/>\nThe new Wade House stagecoach hotel opened to the public in 1850. It was built of locally harvested and sawn lumber. Its three-story, Greek Revival style reflected the architectural fashion of the &#8220;civilized&#8221; East. To travelers, Wade House represented the prosperity and progress of the young village. The hotel was the scene of cotillions, business meetings, political caucuses and circuit court sessions. The taproom buzzed with debates of issues as mundane as last year&#8217;s crops and as heady as secession and the abolition of slavery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kohler Family Restores Wade House, 1950s<\/strong><br \/>\nBy 1950, 100 years after its construction, Wade House was dilapidated but stood in a basically unaltered condition. Marie Christine Kohler and her sister-in-law, Ruth DeYoung Kohler, were soon going to bring Wade House&#8217;s rich history back to life. It was the vision of Marie Kohler, daughter of Kohler Company founder John Michael Kohler, to restore the historic stagecoach hotel to its 1850s heyday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Property Deeded to the Wisconsin Historical Society<\/strong><br \/>\nRuth DeYoung Kohler personally directed the restoration and sought to deed the property to the Wisconsin Historical Society upon completion. Amid great fanfare, complete with an appearance by poet Carl Sandburg, Wade House opened to the public on June 6, 1953, as the Society&#8217;s second historic site. Sadly, Mrs. Kohler did not live to see the fruit of her labors. She passed away three months before the grand opening.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wade House Historic Site Expansions<\/strong><br \/>\nIn 1963 the Wisconsin Legislature voted to create a permanent home for the carriage collection of Wesley W. Jung, grandson of a Sheboygan carriage maker, at the Wade House site. In 1968 the Wesley W. Jung Carriage Museum opened to the public.<\/p>\n<p>Restoration continued in 1999 when the Kohler Trust for Preservation pledged a $1.8 million gift to rebuild the Herrling Sawmill on its original site. The mill, which had stood in Greenbush throughout the second half of the 19th century, opened to the public on June 16, 2001.<\/p>\n<p>In one of the more transformative moments in the site&#8217;s history, a new 38,000-square-foot Visitor Center and Wesley W. Jung Carriage Museum opened to the public on June 8, 2013, 60 years to the week from the opening of Wade House historic site. This LEED-certified structure with direct access from Highway 23, offers engaging orientation exhibits, dining, shopping, meeting and facility rentals spaces, together with a state-of-the-art, multi-faceted reinstallation of the site&#8217;s horse-drawn vehicle collection.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014 the new structure was awarded two American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Technology Awards (1st place at the local ASHRAE level and 2nd place at the regional ASHRAE level). The ASHRAE Technology Awards recognize outstanding achievements by members who have successfully applied innovative building design in the areas of occupant comfort, indoor air quality and energy conservation.[\/su_spoiler][\/su_accordion]<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"margin-top:15px;
