Experience pre-1865 history at the Annual Redbud Trail Rendezvous and Civil War Encampment April 27-28, 2019 \u00a0at the Fulton County Museum in Rochester, Indiana with live music, dance, pre-1840s fur trade era reenactors, Civil War reenactors, food cooked over wood fires, and more. Hours and activities vary daily. \u00a0Come and enjoy the Redbud Trail Rendezvous at the site of the Trail of Courage when the redbuds are blooming. See the Fulton County Museum, Round Barn Museum, and their Living History Village.<\/p>\n

The Redbud Trail Rendezvous will be setup in the Living History Village, just south of the Round Barn. WE ARE INCLUDING CIVIL WAR \u2013 SO TIME PERIOD WILL BE PRE-1865. \u00a0The purpose of the Redbud Trail Rendezvous and Civil War Encampment is to educate the public about frontier history, preserve history and heritage of pre-1865 era, and provide a fun and relaxing time for participants! Teaching is one of the purposes for the Redbud Trail Rendezvous.<\/p>\n

Hours:<\/strong> Saturday 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; Sunday 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Redbud trees form a lovely background for the Redbud Trail Rendezvous at the Fulton County Museum’s Living History Village area. Every spring the Redbud Trail Rendezvous is one of the first outdoor events of the season. This event is brimming with frontier history and often brings surprises for the participants and public. Over a hundred historic reenactors set up camps and live outdoors for the event, demonstrating primitive skills of the era as well as\u00a0traditional crafts, frontier life ways, and pioneer skills such as cooking over wood fires and tomahawk throwing. The event is educational and fun, showing authentic history as re-enacted by real people.<\/p>\n

Historic camps portray periods from the American Revolutionary War to the American Civil War. People dressed in authentic pre-1865 outfits demonstrate many traditional crafts. Crafts include flint knapping, beadwork, spinning and weaving, leather, flintknapping, watercolor painting, wood carving, blacksmith, scrimshaw, fingerweaving, and much more.<\/p>\n

Event Amenities:<\/strong> straw, free firewood, low price for camping & trading, free showers beside museum, free admission to the museum and Living History Village at north end of grounds. So come on out and have some fun on the banks of the Tippecanoe River.<\/p>\n

Living History Village 1900-1925<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fulton County’s Living History Village is called Loyal, Indiana, for a little village that used to exist a few miles west of the museum. Originally named Germany, Indiana, the people changed the name to Loyal in 1918 when the U.S. was at war with Germany.<\/p>\n

Loyal, Indiana, now depicts 1900-1925. This period of our history is known as the GOLDEN AGE OF AGRICULTURE because farmers made a profit and they could afford labor-saving equipment like hay elevators and riding cultivators and round barns! More round barns were built in Indiana than any other state. Round barns were an experimental structure touted by the Agricultural colleges as the most economical and best barn ever designed. It saved the farmer labor by having the animals all face the center for feeding.<\/p>\n

The period is also called the GOLDEN AGE OF INDIANA LITERATURE because of so many great writers, such as James Whitcomb Riley, George Ade, Booth Tarkington, Gene Stratton Porter, etc.<\/p>\n

The first quarter of the 20th century was a time of unprecedented change: from horse power to cars and aeroplanes, from isolation to World War I’s global involvement. Cars and tractors were replacing horses — blacksmiths were converting their shops into garages. The industrial revolution had reached the home and the farm, and everything was changing, including clothing styles, cooking utensils, labor-saving gadgets such as vacuum cleaners and apple peelers.[\/su_spoiler][\/su_accordion]<\/p>\n

Fulton County Historical Society was founded in 1963 with its first location at the old Rochester Depot. Through the years, donations to the Fulton County Historical Society of a round barn, print shop, chicken house, 1832 Polke house\/stagecoach inn, windmill, the relocation of the Rochester depot and log cabin, and building projects such as a foot bridge and blacksmith shop have formed the nucleus of a Living History Village called Loyal, Indiana, which portrays the period of 1900-1925. Additions to the village are planned in the future.[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”Read More”]\nThree branch groups of the Fulton County Historical Society meet several times a year: the Genealogy Section, the Potawatomi Trail of Death Association (see www.potawatomi-tda.org), and Fulton County Historical Power Association. FCHS seeks to preserve history through publications, displays, special events, drama, music, and monthly meetings.<\/p>\n

Fulton County Historical Society Honors Original Inhabitants<\/strong>
\nIn 1976 as a Bicentennial project, members of the Fulton County Historical Society conceived of a special event to honor the Potawatomi Indians who had been the original inhabitants of northern Indiana but had been forcibly removed to Kansas in 1838, an event that became known as the Trail of Death. They called that first event the Trail of Death Rendezvous. Allen Willard, son of Bill and Shirley Willard, earned his Eagle award by leading his local Boy Scout troop to erect a historical marker at the second night\u2019s camp site on that removal, where the first death occurred. In 1977 the name of the event was changed to Trail of Courage in order to focus on life before the removal when this was still Potawatomi territory. Allen joined the Order of the Arrow and performed the buffalo dance and other Indian dances at the Trail of Courage for the next few years.<\/p>\n

The first year, 1976, the event was held in a soybean field owned by Clyde and Opal Neff, because the field was located on the Trail of Death route and was close to the camp site of the second night on the journey west, where the first death occurred. It was on Indiana 25 about 6 miles south of Rochester. The next year the event was moved to the Tippecanoe River to a pine woods owned by Bob Kern, which was located on Olson Road between Old 31 and New US 31, about 2 miles north of Rochester. The Trail of Courage was held in the pine woods for 9 years, and grew to be a major festival. Thanks to the generosity of Bob Kern, who never charged rent, FCHS was able to save money to purchase land for a permanent home for the Trail of Courage and a site for a museum.<\/p>\n

Today the Trail of Courage is a big festival attracting 12,000 to 18,000 annually. It has historic camps set up by re-enactors in these areas: French & Indian War, Voyageurs canoe camps, Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Western Fur Trade, Plains Indian teepees, and Woodland Indian wigwams. There is also a re-creation of Chippeway, Indiana, the first white settlement in Fulton County, of which William Polke was the postmaster in 1832. Over 35 wooden booths house demonstrations and vendors of crafts, foods, plus educational displays. Several log cabins have been constructed. Canoe rides are offered on the Tippecanoe River. All foods are cooked over wood fires: buffalo burgers, ham & beans, fish and chips, vegetable soup, venison stew, barbecue, corn on the cob, apple sausage, turkey legs, and popcorn. For the sweet tooth there are apple dumplings, fudge, cookies, and ice cream. Even the drinks are historic: cider, coffee, sassafras tea, iced tea, homemade root beer, etc. No coke allowed! Everything is pre-1840 to portray frontier Indiana. There are two stages with music and dance from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Indian dances are held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Indian dance arena, outlined by teepees. Crafts include spinning wheel, basketry, flintknapping, fingerweaving of Indian sashes, weaving of rugs, pewter casting, blacksmithing, tin-smithing, rope making, bow making, and much more. Competitions for muzzle loading shooters, tomahawk throws and other sports are held.[\/su_spoiler][\/su_accordion]<\/p>\n
