Relive early America at the 16th Annual Chippewa River Rendezvous on August 24-25, 2019 at Mill Yard Park in Cornell, Wisconsin. The Chippewa River Rendezvous has grown to over 4000 visitors during the weekend encampment. Admission is free for this two day event and is as educational and it is entertaining for the whole family.<\/p>\n

Join the The thousands of attendees are able to walk along the banks of the beautiful Chippewa River and travel back through time to the late 1600’s and learn about the history of Wisconsin and the people who once lived here. From the Ojibwa to the French, English, Irish and Scotsmen, to the pioneers of the western frontier. You will see pre-1840 Fur trade and Civil War camps and Artillery.<\/p>\n

Visitors can sit with a blacksmith, a Spinner of wool or a Dyer or Cloth and other living history demontratons. You can try your own hand at making an arrowhead or starting a fire without a match. The Chippewa River Rendezvous offers everyone the opportunity to experience life in a tipi, a single pole lodge or a Civil War sibly and learn how our everyday items were made: soap, clothing, bows and arrows, bullets and knives. Or visit a trapper camp as he shares his knowledge of trapping, skinning, preserving hides and trading furs.<\/p>\n

In addition, The Chippewa River Rendezvous features primitive games and competitions for all ages including Frying Pan Toss, Hawk & Knife Throwing, Liars Contest, Treasure Hunt in the Hay, and Cat and Mouse. There will also be prize drawings, silent auctions, historical demonstrations, worship service, delicious food and a large modern day flea market, car show, craft fair and “Bountiful” Farmers market as well as a Historical Trader Row. Find all of this and at the Chippewa River Rendezvous at Mill Yard Park in Cornell, Wisconsin in late August each year.<\/p>\n

\nNO TABLES OR CANOPIES PROVIDED. Set up can begin on Friday from 8:AM – dark. Sat & Sun set up begins at 6:AM. Must be set up by 8:AM. There will be a designated parking area for all venders’ vehicles. If you need to work out of your vehicle or camper, you will have to purchase one or more spaces to accommodate them. Unreserved spaces will be sold on a “first come, first served basis”. THIS IS A FAMILY ORIENTED EVENT. No offensive Items will be sold or displayed. No offensive music.<\/p>\n

All of these rendezvous ultimately included a major transfer of furs and goods to be traded for furs. In North America during the fur trade era, from the 16th century to the mid-19th century, this included the Voyageur Rendezvous and the Mountain Man or Buckskinner Rendezvous. Comparably speaking, the Rocky Mountain Man Rendezvous had a very short life-span, from 1825-1840. On the other hand, French Traders were active in the Great Lakes area as early as the 16th century, with voyageur rendezvous activity in the Grand Portage, Minnesota area between the 1730s and 1805.\r\n\r\nThe French started trading in furs in North America in the 16th century, the English established trading posts on Hudson Bay in present-day Canada in the 17th century, and the Dutch had trade by the same time in New Netherland. The 19th-century North American fur trade, when the industry was at its peak of economic importance, involved the development of elaborate trade networks and companies.\r\n\r\nThis fur trade became one of the main economic ventures in North America attracting competition among the French, British, Dutch, Spanish, and Russians. Indeed, in the early history of the United States, capitalizing on this trade, and removing the British stranglehold over it, was seen as a major economic objective. Many Native American societies across the continent came to depend on the fur trade as their primary source of income. By the mid-1800s, however, changing fashions in Europe brought about a collapse in fur prices. The American Fur Company and some other companies failed. \r\n\r\nIn canoe-based fur trade areas, one type of rendezvous is associated with the voyageur and canoe-based fur trade business which was largely in Canada and the states in the US around the Great Lakes, especially in Minnesota and Wisconsin. These Voyageur Rendezvous were generally at a transportation transfer point within in a wilderness route that could not be traversed in one season run by and including the fur trade of only a single company. The transfer was the dominant reason for holding the rendezvous although they included other meetings and revelry.\r\n\r\nRendezvous held in the western part of what is now the United States included a more diverse range of activities than their northern counterparts. Such a rendezvous might include several fur trading companies, and array of fur traders, mountain men and native Americans. A substantial amount of deal-making and trading occurred at these rendezvous. These were often a temporary \"town\" of sorts with businesses which offered the fur trade workers and participants ways to spend their money on supplies and revelry. The North American fur trade in the west is identified with these large annual Mountain Man rendezvous that were held in various Rocky mountain locations from 1825 until 1840. One of the largest of these was the Rendezvous of 1832. Mill Yard Park, site of the annual Chippewa River Rendezvous, Cornell Visitors Center and Native American Museum. Located on the banks of the Chippewa River on Bridge Street in Cornell is a picturesque 10-acre park that features 2 ball fields, the Visitors Center, pavilion, playground, drinking water, toilet facilities and parking for the nearby Old Abe State Trail. <\/p>\n

Nestled on the banks of the scenic Chippewa River off of Hwy 178, the City of Cornell is a center for area history and year-round recreation. The city has the only remaining pulpwood stacker, located in the Mill Yard Park, site of the Cornell Visitors Center and Native American Museum (open May through October).<\/p>\n

Cornell is also a trailhead for the 20-mile Old Abe Trail, for biking, walking, rollerblading and snowmobiling. Brunet Island State Park offers camping and other outdoor recreation. Cornell also has links to Wisconsin\u2019s extensive snowmobile trail network. A community center offers flea markets, antique shows and other events. Cornell is home to several community festivals throughout the year; fireworks on July 3, a car show, Chippewa River Rendezvous and an annual craft and art fair.<\/p>\n
