All are welcome to the 31st Annual Northern Cherokee Nation Powwow and Cultural Gathering on September 20-22, 2019 at the Northern Cherokee Nation Tribal Complex in Clinton, Missouri. Come join in and learn more about the traditions and history of your local Cherokee tribe. Open to the Public. Native American speakers and vendors, drawings, favorite foods such as Indian Tacos and fry bread and many dancers and artists. Drums start at 12pm Friday. Plan to come on Saturday and Sunday for the big $5 pancake breakfast 7am-11am.<\/p>\n

The Northern Cherokee Nation Powwow and Cultural Gathering, scheduled for Friday through Sunday, is free of charge and open to the public. Held at the Northern Cherokee Nation\u2019s Tribal Complex located five miles east of Clinton, Missouri, on Highway 7, the event will feature Native American dancers, artists, and numerous vendors with Native American exhibitions. Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy the entertainment!<\/p>\n

The Northern Cherokee Nation Powwow Grand Entry is scheduled to take place on Saturday at 2 p.m. All proceeds from the Pancake Breakfast will go to benefit projects for the Northern Cherokee Nation.<\/p>\n

The Northern Cherokee Nation has had several inquiries about federal recognition and why we are not federally recognized. Federal recognition is a federal government process. As such, it is a slow and long drawn out affair. The steps to obtain federal recognition have and are presently being taken. <\/p>\n

Part of those steps is to write and file a Letter of Intent to petition the federal government for recognition. This was done in 1985 & 1991. In 1999 the federal government (BIA) Bureau of Indian Affairs gave our Nation petition numbers, #100 for the Northern or Green band; #100a for both the Sac River and White River bands; and #100b for the group that now calls itself the Northern Cherokee of the Old Louisiana Territory. <\/p>\n

The (BIA) considered all these bands to be part of the same Cherokee Nation. Also, we had to prove that we had existed and worked as a united and cohesive Nation for at least 200 years in the Missouri and Arkansas areas in order to be considered an existing and viable group of Cherokees. Chief Grey Owl delivered that proof to the (BIA) while he was Chief and that paperwork, The 200 year History of the Northern Cherokee, became the book; History of the Northern Cherokee. However, during the editing process by a person not a Northern Cherokee Nation citizen, many key items and information were removed. We continue to wait to hear if the acknowledgment office at the (BIA) will decide whether to recognize us or invent new hoops for us to jump through.<\/p>\n
