The Annual Gathering at Macktown on April 27-28, 2019 at Macktown Living History Educational Center in Rockton, Illinois lets you experience pre-1850s frontier life. Take a step back in time to experience American frontier life through the 1840’s. At the Gathering at Macktown, you will meet traders and trappers, French voyageurs and Native Americans. Enjoy food and mercantile vendors, demonstrations and black powder shooting. This Gathering at Macktown takes place on the last full weekend of April each year.<\/p>\n

On the early frontier, a Gathering was a special time once a year when trappers, traders, settlers and Native Americans came together to trade, share news, have sporting contests and ofttimes even marry. More civilized than an early Rendezvous, since it now included settler families, it was a greatly anticipated event that could last for several days.
\nIn this living history event, the Gathering at Macktown, visitors can feel themselves transported to a different time. Whether tasting homemade root beer or period foods, visiting the Native American village and experiencing a woodlands lifestyle, learning the proper way to throw a tomahawk, or strolling through a historic site seemingly untouched by time, they will experience the 1650-1850 eras of exploration, trade and early settlement.<\/p>\n

\"Gathering<\/p>\n

Visitors can talk with voyageurs, trappers, Native Americans, militiamen, settlers and craftsmen who have gathered to trade news and goods. There will be black powder shooting demonstrations, archery demonstrations, canoe landings, demonstrations of old-time crafts and skills, bag pipes and Janesville Drum and Fife Corps will perform – and more!!
\nTour original buildings on a national historic site, Macktown Living History Educational Center, and meet Stephen Mack as he shares his home with you. This living history presentation of American life from 1690 to 1850 is a family-friendly event with plenty of hands-on activities, music and much more!<\/p>\n

So, why just read about history when you can experience it! Reenactors at the Annual Gathering at Macktown have studied the time period, and love sharing what they have learned with camp visitors. The Gathering is expected attract about 100 reenactors roving in about the camp in period attire.<\/p>\n

There will also be chances for guests to try out archery (times to be determined). Children will enjoy when the Candy Cannon is shot! (Shooting candy out of a cannon for children to gather.) There also will be a paddle dance, comparable to the The Virginia Reel during the Civil War.<\/p>\n

About Macktown<\/strong>
\nThe Winnebago County Forest Preserve District, which owns the land on which Macktown and the trading post once sat, and the Macktown Living History Education Center are working to restore Macktown to its 1830 – 1846 historic condition.<\/p>\n

Macktown was founded in the mid-1830’s by Stephen Andrew Mack Jr., and his wife, Mary Hononegah. In prosperous times, Pekatonic boasted of the Mack’s two-story home and store, a furniture store, a school room, a shoemaker’s shop, a tavern, a trading post, fur trapper’s cabins, and other homes belonging to the population of 200 to 300. All of these rendezvous ultimately included a major transfer of furs and goods to be traded for furs. In North America during the fur trade era, from the 16th century to the mid-19th century, this included the Voyageur Rendezvous and the Mountain Man or Buckskinner Rendezvous. Comparably speaking, the Rocky Mountain Man Rendezvous had a very short life-span, from 1825-1840. On the other hand, French Traders were active in the Great Lakes area as early as the 16th century, with voyageur rendezvous activity in the Grand Portage, Minnesota area between the 1730s and 1805.\r\n\r\nThe French started trading in furs in North America in the 16th century, the English established trading posts on Hudson Bay in present-day Canada in the 17th century, and the Dutch had trade by the same time in New Netherland. The 19th-century North American fur trade, when the industry was at its peak of economic importance, involved the development of elaborate trade networks and companies.\r\n\r\nThis fur trade became one of the main economic ventures in North America attracting competition among the French, British, Dutch, Spanish, and Russians. Indeed, in the early history of the United States, capitalizing on this trade, and removing the British stranglehold over it, was seen as a major economic objective. Many Native American societies across the continent came to depend on the fur trade as their primary source of income. By the mid-1800s, however, changing fashions in Europe brought about a collapse in fur prices. The American Fur Company and some other companies failed. \r\n\r\nIn canoe-based fur trade areas, one type of rendezvous is associated with the voyageur and canoe-based fur trade business which was largely in Canada and the states in the US around the Great Lakes, especially in Minnesota and Wisconsin. These Voyageur Rendezvous were generally at a transportation transfer point within in a wilderness route that could not be traversed in one season run by and including the fur trade of only a single company. The transfer was the dominant reason for holding the rendezvous although they included other meetings and revelry.\r\n\r\nRendezvous held in the western part of what is now the United States included a more diverse range of activities than their northern counterparts. Such a rendezvous might include several fur trading companies, and array of fur traders, mountain men and native Americans. A substantial amount of deal-making and trading occurred at these rendezvous. These were often a temporary \"town\" of sorts with businesses which offered the fur trade workers and participants ways to spend their money on supplies and revelry. The North American fur trade in the west is identified with these large annual Mountain Man rendezvous that were held in various Rocky mountain locations from 1825 until 1840. One of the largest of these was the Rendezvous of 1832. The remnants of Winnebago County’s earliest settlement will be found on a forested bluff overlooking the Rock and Pecatonica Rivers in Rockton, Illinois at the Macktown Living History Educational Center. It was founded in the mid-1830’s by Stephen Andrew Mack, Jr., and his wife, Mary Hononegah. Macktown, then known as Pekatonic, represents a time and place of change on the Illinois frontier when the fur trade collided with a progressive world.<\/p>\n

Following Mack’s death in 1850 and the destruction of the bridge in 1851, the Macktown settlement area failed to thrive. The northern part of the settlement prospered and officially became known as Rockton in 1846 or 1847.<\/p>\n
