The Chattanooga Pow Wow on the River on March 31 – April 1, 2018 at the First Tennessee Pavilion in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Chattanooga Pow Wow on the River is a chance for the public to learn more about the dress, music, dances, food and handicrafts that have been passed from generation to generation of these tribes.<\/p>\n

Chattanooga Pow Wow on the River<\/h4>\n

Representatives from over 20 tribes of American Indians will gather for a heritage celebration and powwow. While the majority of the participants will be Cherokee, there also will be members of the Poarch Creek, Muskogee, Seminole, Lenape, Chickasaw, Comanche, Apache, Lakota Sioux, Micmac, Winnebago and Navajo tribes in attendance.<\/p>\n

The main event of the Chattanooga Pow Wow on the River each day is the Grand Entry, a procession in which the tribes enter the pavilion in full dress. It is a majestic ceremony with plenty of pageantry. Grand Entry times are noon and 6 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday. The Grand Entry is what opens the circle for all the dancers and the actual gathering to begin.<\/p>\n

The annual Native American Heritage Festival and Pow Wow on the River brings to the Chattanooga community a celebration of Native American heritage and culture. This event, held at the First Tennessee Pavilion is open to the public. The festival brings to the Chattanooga area professional Native American performers and artists and is designed to educate and enhance the community\u2019s awareness of Native American heritage and customs and pays tribute to those who once occupied these lands.<\/p>\n

[su_accordion][su_spoiler title=”More about Chattanooga Pow Wow on the River”]\nMany forms of art are included in the event. Authentic Native American artists set up and offer their works for sale. Performing artist include Native American dancers and professional musicians. A dance and drum competition pulls in competitors and spectators from across the nation. Live demonstrations and working exhibits provide attendees with opportunities for a hands-on learning experience.<\/p>\n

Educational opportunities at the Chattanooga Pow Wow on the River include such activities as storytelling, bow making, traditional lodging exhibits, beading, different styles of weaving, shell and wood carving, flint knapping (arrowheads), corn husk crafts, and a blow gun demonstration. These various forms of art allows attendees an opportunity for an up close and personal look at Cherokee and Native American heritage and culture._ELG8934<\/p>\n

The Chattanooga Pow Wow on the River also includes a dance and drum competition conducted by professional head staff to manage the competition and professionals specialized in the field of dance and drum competitions.<\/p>\n

The live demonstrations and hands on educational and learning exhibits are supported by participating Native American artists skilled in the fields of the various arts being presented. These areas include, but are not limited to, bead working, wood and shell carving, weaving, bow and arrow, drum making, and blow gun demonstrations.<\/p>\n

Chattanooga Pow Wow on the River visitors are encouraged to ask tribe members and other participants what their dance regalia designs represent. Vendors will be set up in the pavilion selling artwork, pottery, clothing, jewelry, silver and turquoise jewelry and all types of beaded items.[\/su_spoiler][\/su_accordion]<\/p>\n
