Join us for “Repair to the Fort: Pontiacs Rebellion” on July 14-15, 2018 at Fort Frederick State Park in Big Pool, Maryland. Experience life at the fort as civilians and militia flee to the fort for safety during Pontiac?s uprising. Highlights of the event include musket firing presentations, hearth cooking demonstrations, a clothing talk and militia drills.<\/p>\n

Event Hours<\/strong> are 10:00 am to 4:00 pm Saturday, and 10:00 am to 3:00 pm Sunday.<\/p>\n

About Fort Frederick and Pontiac’s Rebellion<\/strong>
\nIn 1763 the Ottawa Chief Pontiac led a massive Indian rebellion against the English. Governor Sharpe of Maryland reactivated the fort, which had ultimately been shut down after the French and Indian War, and sent arms and militia to garrison it. Seven hundred area settlers flocked to the fort for protection. Although the Indians besieged the new English Fort Pitt, which stood on Duquesne’s old site, they never got close to Fort Frederick. Pontiac’s Rebellion was eventually put down, and Fort Frederick again found itself abandoned.<\/p>\n

About Fort Frederick<\/strong>
\nFort Frederick was one of the largest frontier fortifications built during the French and Indian War. It occupies an area of 1.5 acres, and it was built to stand up to a major military assault. The fort’s massive stone walls are 4.5 feet thick at the base. Inside the fort, two large barracks buildings face each other across the parade ground. The fort is open and inside the walls you can tour the two barracks buildings. They are furnished with sleeping quarters, workshops and offices, just as they would have been during the mid-18th century.<\/p>\n
