Join us for the 2018 Kootenays National Aboriginal Day Festival at the Lakeshore Resort and Campground in Windemere, BC Canada on June 16, 2018 beginning with a pancake breakfast at 9:00 a.m.<\/p>\n

The Akisqnuk First Nation and the Shuswap Indian Band proudly present their annual Kootenays National Aboriginal Day Festival. Join them in Windemere, BC at the Lakeshore Resort and Campground to celebrate with their cross cultural event. Enjoy drum groups, dancers, vendors, demonstrations and learn more about their culture. The day begins with a fund raiser pancake breakfast at 9am and the Grand entry at 11am. The festival continues until closing at 4pm.

The day-long Kootenays National Aboriginal Day Festival offers the community an opportunity to get a taste of the history, culture and local diversity of the Columbia Valley’s two First Nations. The Shuswap Indian Band and Akisqnuk used to organize separate (events), but now organize one jointly.<\/p>\n

The day will begin with a fund raiser breakfast between 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. At 11:00 a.m., the grand entry will start with flags followed by the opening prayer. There will be children’s activities, drumming, dancing and storytelling about traditional legends between noon and 3:30 p.m. when the closing ceremony will begin. The beach along the lake will be accessible throughout the event and several food vendors will be on hand, including the Kootenay Kanteen and a hot dog stand that will also be raising money for the Elders Gathering. There will be numerous draw prizes given out, and everyone who attends will receive one free entry. A second entry for another chance to win can be earned by sitting with an Elder (there will be an Elders’ area set up) and learning one traditional word.<\/p>\n

The Kootenays National Aboriginal Day Festival is family-friendly and should include something for everyone. Seating is limited, bring your own chairs or blankets to sit on!<\/p>\n

\nLakeshore Resort and Campground, venue of the Kootenays National Aboriginal Day Festival, is 100 per cent owned and operated by the Akisqnuk First Nation. The Akisqnuk First Nation is a vibrant, growing community nearly 300 members strong situated in the Columbia Valley, southeast British Columbia, Canada. The Lakeshore Resort & Campground is the largest lakeshore campground in the Columbia Valley. it is ideally located a few short kilometres north of Fairmont Hot Springs, B.C. and 6 kilometres south of Windermere, B.C.<\/p>\n

What is National Aboriginal Day?<\/strong>
\nNational Aboriginal Day was first proclaimed by the Governor General in 1996, and is meant to provide an opportunity to acknowledge the unique achievements of First Nations, Metis and Inuit in fields as diverse as agriculture, the environment, business and the arts. The date was chosen because it coincides with the summer solstice, which is the longest day of the year and a time when many Aboriginal people celebrate their culture and heritage.<\/p>\n
