Rate This Event

Join area residents to celebrate the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge Reenactment on February 23-24, 2019 at the Moores Creek National Battlefield in Currie, North Carolina. Johnston County Colonial Militia Reenactors and others, in character as Patriot and Loyalist troops, will drill, fire their weapons and demonstrate period crafts such as blacksmithing, candle-dipping and powder horn making. It has been nearly 250 years since a large Loyalist Militia, mostly Scottish Highlanders wielding swords, charged over a partially dismantled bridge and into the darkness, only to be met by the flashes and sounds of muskets and cannons booming in the distance. Patriot forces walked away that day victorious, and word would soon spread all across the divided British American colonies of this glorious victory.

About the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge
“King George and Broadswords!” was the rallying cry on February 27, 1776 as a group of Scottish Highlanders charged across a partially dismantled bridge in the early morning hours of February 27th, 1776. Little did they know that nearly one thousand Patriots waited for them on the other side. In what would be the last broadsword charge by Scottish Highlanders, The Battle of Moores Creek Bridge was a pivotal battle in the Revolutionary War. This first significant victory for the Patriots in the American Revolution ended the British threat to North Carolina until late in the Revolutionary War. Some historians claim it emboldened North Carolinians to pass the Halifax Resolves on April 1, 1776, urging the province’s delegates to the Continental Congress to seek independence from Great Britain.
