Join us for the annual Washington Christmas Day Crossing Reenactment on December 25, 2019 at the Washington Crossing Historic Park in Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania. Join fellow citizens from around the country for a Bucks County tradition featuring several hundred reenactors clad in Continental military dress and George Washington himself. A reenactor dressed as General Washington kicks off the event with an inspiring speech to his men – a group of 250 to 300 reenactors dressed in Continental Army uniforms before the group huddles inside a full-size replica Durham boat and makes the journey across the river.

Washington Christmas Day Crossing Reenactment

George Washington’s daring 1776 Christmas Day crossing of the Delaware River and defeat of the Hessians in Trenton is considered a turning point in the Revolutionary War. Witness this historic event for yourself during one of two reenactments in December.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Information is provided for both the rehearsal (second Sunday of December) and the official Christmas Day crossing. Participants need to participate in the rehearsal so they will know where to be and what to do. Visitors may choose to watch the dress rehearsal if they cannot make it on Christmas Day.

During the Washington Crossing Reenactment Dress Rehearsal, hundreds of troops row across the river in uniform just as they do for the ‘official’ event on Christmas Day. In addition, special colonial-era activities and demonstrations throughout the historic village provide your family with a full day of fun and learning. The Washington Crossing Reenactment Dress Rehearsal is a great way to see the reenactment if you can’t make it on December 25!

The Washington Christmas Day Crossing Reenactment has been a tradition for generations. River crossings are contingent upon safe conditions for participants. However, even if conditions do not allow for crossing, ceremonies, speeches and commemorative activities still occur. We suggest visitors arrive before 1:00 P.M. on Christmas Day to ensure a good place along the viewing line.

Origins of the Crossing Event
While the annual crossing has been popular for decades, it had difficulty in its early origins. The first few attempts at a commemoration Crossing in 1838 and then again in 1876 lead to rowdiness among the reenactors and the event was not repeated again for nearly 100 years. In 1947, a fraternity promoted a non-hazing initiation by reenacting the famous trip across the Delaware, sparking new interest in holding an annual Crossing. When National Geographic Magazine featured a story about the Crossing in 1952 complete with photos, the modern tradition was born.
