Rate This Event

All are welcome at the 23rd Annual Wildhorse Pow Wow on February 9-10, 2019 at Leuzinger High School in Lawndale, California. Always on the second weekend of February, and often landing on Valentine’s Day, the Wildhorse Pow Wow serves as a kind of opening ceremony for the Southern California pow wow circuit. Experience Native American dancing and singing, arts and crafts and food. The Wildhorse Singers formed in 1985 out of necessity. One of its founders and the current pow wow organizer, Jorge Lechuga, formed the group as a sober drum for recovering alcoholics and drug addicts. Although he and his family are Diné, the Wildhorse Singers is often as diverse as the more than 150,000 Natives living in the greater Los Angeles area.

Wildhorse Pow Wow

Today, the Wildhorse Singers and their supporters from the Wildhorse Native American Association, are dedicated to the Native community, starting the Wildhorse Pow Wow because they wanted to do something for the community.

Unlike the big California casinos, the Wildhorse Pow Wow is almost exclusively funded through its food sales. Often whatever is left over from the pow wow goes into a few small scholarships that are then given to young Native adults already in college. And although their scholarships are seldom larger than $500, any little bit helps Native students.

Wildhorse Princess Pageant
The Wildhorse Princess Pageant was created to help young native girls/women to strive for higher education and to keep their traditional traditions alive. Wildhorse Pow Wow Princess primary goal will be to utilize communication skills through teaching and sharing with the rich traditions, culture, and heritage of Native American Indian people. The Wildhorse Pow Wow Princess serves as a role model, leader in the community and representative of the annual Wildhorse Pow Wow and as well as a goodwill ambassador from all cultures/native nations throughout the greater Los Angeles and beyond.

The Wildhorse Princess pageant is held for young native girls/women who are between the ages of 8 to 17.
