2019 Abingdon Civil War Weekend
Experience history at the 8th Annual Abingdon Civil War Weekend on July 27-28, 2019 at the Abingdon Muster Grounds in Abington, Virginia. Abingdon Civil War Weekend is a free event and is part of the popular Virginia Highlands Festival that takes place on the last weekend of July each year. Meet living historians portraying famous Civil War military and civilian persons. See firing demonstrations and presentations by reenactors.
Abingdon Civil War Weekend
The public is welcome to witness and experience the Abingdon Civil War Weekend, a family-friendly event for all ages. The Abingdon Muster Grounds, battlefield, public areas and camps will be open to the public on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p..m and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Both Union and Confederate troops used the Abingdon Muster Grounds property during the Civil War. Walk the property where Lieutenant Samuel Vance Fulkerson mustered some of the 37th Virginians, whom he commanded. See the home “Retirement” Abingdon Civil War Weekend, which was occupied by invading Union troops late in the war. Visit encampments of rank and file, see firing demonstrations and drills, hear the booms of artillery, observe cavalry, participate in a Sunday morning worship service, learn from interpreters, historians, scholars, and much more!
General parking is available on the grassy lot at the corner of Colonial Road and Holston Street. Handicapped parking is available at the Keller Interpretive Center. The free trolleys also stop at the Abingdon Muster Grounds.
