The Battles for New Berne Reenactment is being sponsored by the SCV Rains Brothers Camp 1370 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans in New Bern, along with the 5th North Carolina State Troops Co. D and the 7th North Carolina State Troops Co. F. Major contributors with artillery in the event are Riley’s Battery and the Northampton Artillery.

Saturday & Sunday Battle Reenactments
There will be a Saturday re-enactment of the Battle of New Bern, which took place on March 14, 1862 east of New Bern at the current New Bern Historical Society’s Battlefield Park. On Sunday, a re-enactment is planned for the Battle of Batchelder’s Creek, which took place on February. 1, 1864. It was an attempt by Gen. Robert Pickett to retake New Bern from the Federalists. While it was a Confederate victory, the city remained under Union control until the end of the war.

At the Battles for New Berne Reenactment, participants will be in camps for Union and Confederate troops, with soldiers cooking and living as they did in that era. There will also be many traveling sutlers, who during the Civil War, followed the troops and sold needed wares to troops and civilians alike. A number of other artillery demonstrations are also planned. Saturday and Sunday’s activities will also feature speakers. On-site food vendors will be available.

For the actual battle re-enactments, spectators will ring the battlefield and are encouraged to bring chairs and ear-protection if they are sensitive to loud noises.
