2019 FIHA Powwow
Join us for the 54th Annual FIHA Powwow on March 22-24, 2019 at the St Lucie County Fairgrounds in Fort Pierce, Florida. The Florida Indian Heritage Association (FIHA) powwow attracts between 6,000 and 8,000 participants and spectators over the weekend, many who travel specifically for the occasion. Come out for a great weekend of dancing, drumming, awesome vendors and fellowship; as we learn more about the Native American culture. We look forward to seeing you there.
FIHA Powwow
The annual FIHA powwow is a family-friendly gathering, boasting a 3-day multinational event that features leaders and groups from the Seminole, Miccosukee, Lakota Sioux, Kiowa, Cherokee, Ponca and other tribes. Participants and spectators are treated to intertribal dancing, crafts competition, tipi and re-enactment villages, educational seminars, Native American cuisine, and over 30 vendors selling and trading everything from beads and leather goods to herbs and pottery.
The FIHA Powwow makes a tremendous effort to maintain that family-friendly environment for their event. Drugs and alcohol are strictly prohibited. Bleacher-type seating is provided around the circle, including a covered area for the elderly and handicapped. There are educational events and seminars, a tepee display and a craft competition on Saturday. FIHA also offers a special area for kids’ activities.
Every year, craftsmen and tradesmen from throughout the country are invited to come to Fort Pierce to display and sell their wares. Vendors sell everything from silver to Pendleton wool blankets to CDs of American Indian singing and flute music. These vendors don’t have to be Native American themselves, but they are encouraged to offer culturally relevant goods. Native American food is also available for visitors to try, a favorite being fry bread (of many varieties). All of this gives the FIHA Powwow a similar feeling to an arts and crafts fair, with a cultural twist, set to the beat of the drums!
