About The Town of Roaring Camp
Mountain man, Isaac Graham, settled here in the 1830s. Soon after, Mexican authorities named Graham’s wild settlement “Roaring Camp.” Roaring Camp is nestled in the Santa Cruz Mountains in the Town of Felton, California. Located just six miles up the hill from Santa Cruz lies a re-creation of an 1880’s logging town, operating trains every day of the year except for Christmas Day. Roaring Camp is a heritage railway with authentic 1880’s steam locomotives operating on our Redwood Forest Steam Train excursion and 1920’s era Beach Trains to Santa Cruz.
In 1842, Graham established the first saw mill west of the Mississippi. Fortunately, the Big Trees here were spared the woodman’s axe, and the area’s first railroad, the Santa Cruz & Felton, began carrying tourists to the Big Trees and the beach in 1875, with the Santa Cruz, Big Trees & Pacific RY has been operating along the 1875 Santa Cruz & Felton route since 1985.
