About the Waccama-Siouan Tribe
Local natives of the Waccama-Siouan tribe call themselves “People of the Fallen Star” referring to their home just a few miles from the shores of huge Lake Waccama, believed to have been formed by a huge meteor. The tribe has about 2000 members with council headquarters in tribal land on Buckhead. The tribe maintains a community outreach and recreation center on the site and has held its annual Pow Wow there since 1970. The ceremony opens with a traditional march and dance on sacred ground in honor of elders, fallen heros and community leaders. Festivities and competitions follow featuring dance, music, drums and song. Visitors will enjoy the beautiful hand-made regalia, often showcasing intricate beadwork, worn for these ceremonies. You’ll also find displays of native crafts and food along with many vendors. Don’t miss the unique cornbread.
