Eric von Aschwege Flintlocks

I have been studying, building, and restoring 18th century style arms since 2003. What started as a hobby became a fulltime business, Eric von Aschwege Flintlocks, and spending several years working with the Colonial Williamsburg Gunshop, I have been fortunate to learn my trade from some of the best tradesmen in the country. I have had the opportunity to study hundreds of American and European arms in museums and private collections, including the Metropolitan Museum in New York and collections at Colonial Williamsburg. Through careful examination and meticulous study, I attempt to take note of the small details that go into original rifles and strive to incorporate these aspects of authenticity into my own work. Stocks are shaped from a blank using planes, spokeshaves, rasps, and finally scrapers – creating a piece that has a feel unlike anything made using modern techniques. Locks and furniture are heavily tuned and customized to look truly authentic. Using many of the same woodworking tools and techniques as gunsmiths in the 18th century, I attempt to give my work the look and feel of a fine quality original flintlock. Hoot AL’s Rifle Shop

Alan Neubauer (Hoot Al) is a Journeyman Traditionalist Gunbuilder who builds antique blackpowder rifles and pistols in an effort to keep the Spirit of the Traditionalist Gunmaker alive. The vintage of the guns are from 1730 to 1830, and are representative of several different schools of gunsmith. His favorite rifles to make are the Lancaster Pennsylvania schooled and an occasional “Hogs” Southern Mountain rifles.
