2019 Coushatta Powwow
Join us at the 23nd Annual Coushatta Powwow on June 7-8, 2019 at the Coushatta Casino Resort Pavillion in Kinder, Louisiana for one of the largest powwows in North America, and is truly a one-of-a-kind experience. Hundreds of Native Americans from the United States and Cananda will travel to perform and compete in the two-day event. Over the course of two days, a couple thousand people will crowd the pavilion area at the Coushatta Powwow where the festivities take place. All ages are welcome. This is a family-friendly event offering a look at the fascinating culture and heritage of Native Americans.
Coushatta Powwow
The public can again expect to see performances with colorful tribal regalia and lots of vendors bringing with them Native American arts, crafts and food. Some of the most popular items for sale will include the famous Coushatta long-leaf pine needle baskets and Indian tacos and frybread.
Watch the excitement as dancers and singers compete for thousands of dollars in prize money. $40,000 is being awarded in the Drum Contest alone! Men and women dancers will compete in different age brackets for different dance styles for top four cash prizes in each category.
The Coushatta Tribe’s annual Powwow begins Friday at 5 p.m. with gourd dancing followed by the grand entry of Native American dancers and drummers at 7 p.m. On Saturday there will be two chances to catch the gourd dancing at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. followed by the grand entries at noon and 7 p.m. Be sure to witness a Grand Entry, a rhythmic march that opens the competitions, when all of the dancers in full regalia claim the Dancing Ground to the accompaniment of tribal drums and singers.
