Powwow History
The Oahu Intertribal Council has evolved from earlier organizations. The first ever Honolulu Intertribal Powwow began in October 1974 with a small group of interested Native American individuals living in Honolulu who longed for a place to celebrate their culture through music, drumming, dance, food and native arts and crafts. Many came to Honolulu via military service, new job opportunities, enrolling in school, marriage or through adoption. Presently, the Honolulu Intertribal Powwow is being sponsored through the Oahu Intertribal Council (OIC). We are currently working to revive and restore the Honolulu Intertribal Powwow to its formative years by working closely with our elders, participating in community and cultural events on Oahu and building our Native relationships with the Island of Hawaii, Kauai, and Maui powwows. It’s Powwow Time, make your plans now to attend the Annual Honolulu Intertribal Powwow this October!
