About the Grand Ronde Veterans Powwow Namesake
Veterans Powwow honors Marcellus Norwest: On the evening of Friday, July 8, 2011, Sharon Norwest and her family marked the first Marcellus Norwest Memorial Veterans Powwow with a giveaway to more than 100 friends and neighbors. The Veterans Powwow was renamed that year to honor the Tribal Elder and Army veteran, Marcellus Norwest, who walked on on May 22.
Marcellus had led the effort to start both the Veterans Powwow, held in recent years at Uyxat Powwow Grounds, and the Veterans Memorial that sits on the Tribal campus of The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. “We’re thankful for what he stood for and for the time and effort he put into making this powwow what it is today,” said Tribal Council Chairwoman Cheryle A. Kennedy in her invocation. “Marce set the example of how to treat our veterans,” said Tribal Council Vice Chair Reyn Leno.
The Grand Ronde Contest Powwow is a family friendly event. We thank you for respecting Grand Ronde’s Tribal community and our culture by not displaying gang affiliation or by bringing drugs, alcohol or weapons to this event. No pets are permitted around the powwow arena.
