MCNAA Intertribal Pow Wow at Plug Pond Demonstrations & Activities

War Canoe Returns
The large War Canoe will return this year to the MCNAA Intertribal Pow Wow thanks to our partnership with Gedakina, Inc. Through their Pathfinders Program, friends from the Penobscot Tribe in Maine will bring the 30’ voyager to the pow-wow for attendees to take a ride around the outer Pond. The rides will be led by Native Master Paddlers from the Tribe. The paddle is a different and fun experience for everyone as well as an educational opportunity based on some of the discussions that take place in the Canoe about the land, ecology, nature, culture and history.

Canoe & Kayak Paddling
We will also have canoe and kayak paddling opportunities for our visitors. Everyone will be able to take either a kayak or the small canoe ride around the shore line of the Pond. These opportunities will be offered free of charge and safely guided by Advisory Council Member Patricia Rocker (Chappaquiddick Wampanoag).
Educational Workshops

An educational component of the event, which has become very popular, is the workshop by Claudia Fox Tree, M.Ed. – Arawak (Yurumein). Interactive conversations will be held both days for about 30 minutes with opportunities for Q & A about First Nations People (Native American) identity, culture, and history. On the other day, attendees will learn and discover First Nations/Native American female role-models and their contributions to contemporary society. The presentation will begin around 11:30 AM each day.

At this years’ special celebration, we will feature the following dance groups: The Kasibahagua Taino Cultural Society – an intertribal, intergenerational organization of indigenous Caribbean singers, musicians, speakers, and artists dedicated to transmitting their ancestral heritage to their present and future generations with dignity and honor. The Kalpulli Heuhuetahtolli Aztec Dance Troup – a professional Aztec dance groups that performs throughout the Country.

Mashpee Wampanoag artist and craft maker, Kerri Helme, will be set up at her stand for craft making with the children. She will offer several different crafts throughout the day that include traditional clay pinch pots, corn husk dolls, and painted deerskin bracelets. Loril Moondream and Peter White Fox will also be set up, near the tipi for craft making. They will help the children make Lakota bone choker necklaces to take home.
