Shawnee County Allied Tribes Traditional Intertribal Pow Wow
The Shawnee County Allied Tribes Traditional Intertribal Pow wow is a “traditional” powwow, and differs from those where dancers and drums compete for cash prizes. The focus of a traditional powwow is social and educational. In addition to giving powwow participants a chance to spend time with family and friends, spectators will not only enjoy the dancing and singing, but also get a chance to learn about Native American culture.
Each dance session of the Shawnee County Allied Tribes Pow Wow, Kansas Powwow will begin with gourd dancing in which men dressed in their regalia, with a fan in one hand and a gourd rattle in the other, lift their heels to the rhythm of songs that used to be sung after battles to honor those who lost their lives and those who defended their people.
After the gourd dancing, there will be a Grand Entry. A color guard carrying the U.S. flag, eagle staff and other flags will enter the arena, followed by all the dancers. For the rest of each dance session, dancers dressed in a variety of regalia will dance in various style based on the type regalia worn.
Arts, Crafts and Food Vendors
Be sure to inspect the arts and craft vendor booths. There also will be concessionaires offering Native food favorites such as Indian tacos, fry bread, corn on the cob and buffalo burgers.
