Annual August Meeting: 100s of Years of History
The August meeting is considered the most important gathering of the Narragansett Indians. The federal Bureau of Indian Affairs in 1982 cited the August meeting as evidence that the tribe, despite state efforts to “detribalize” the Indians in the 1880s, had never disbanded.

The Narragansett People have seen many changes in their lands; however, their traditional culture has been passed down from generation to generation and is even stronger today, thanks to events such as the Annual Narragansett Indian Tribe’s August Meeting Powwow.

Each year’s meeting draws hundreds of people from around the Northeast and beyond to this wooded clearing at the Narragansett Indian Church Grounds. Don’t miss the experience at this year’s Annual Narragansett Indian Tribes August Meeting Powwow. If you can’t make it for some reason, go ahead and mark your calendar for next year (or ten years). This is one Native American powwow with staying power!

Mark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Narragansett Indian Tribes August Meeting Powwow on the second weekend August at the Indian Church Grounds (off Rt. 2) in Charlestown, Rhode Island.
