The Southern Ute Bear Dance Powwow takes place on May 24-25, 2019 at the Sky Ute Fairgrounds in Ignacio, Colorado. The exciting Memorial Day Weekend Powwow competition starts Friday night and goes through Saturday. Men and women, boys and girls will compete for thousands of dollars in prize money in contests that range from traditional styles to fast moving Fancy Dance for the men and Fancy Shawl for the women.
Southern Ute Bear Dance Powwow
The Southern Ute Powwow is a gatherings where both Native and non-Native people gather to meet, dance, sing and honor Native American culture. It is a time for Southern Ute Tribal members, and members of other Tribes throughout the country, to get together and showcase their many talents.
Two Separate Events
Don’t confuse this Southern Ute Bear Dance Powwow at the Sky Ute Fairgrounds with the four day Southern Ute Bear Dance that happens at the same time about three miles away at the Bear Dance Grounds. The traditional Bear Dance, once held in March, welcomes spring and celebrates connections to the Earth, is held on the Memorial Day Weekend at the same time as the “powwow”. Many dancers and visitors will go back and forth between these two events, depending on the schedule.
Southern Ute Bear Dance Powwow dancing starts Friday with registration at 5 p.m., Gourd Dancing from 5 to 6:30 p.m., and the Grand Entry at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Gourd Dancing is from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 5 to 6:30 p.m. with Grand Entries at 1 and 7 p.m. A hand game tournament will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Bear Dance campground.
