Natural animal furs and hides have provided warmth, clothing, decoration and valuable trade goods for thousands of years. Across North America, fur-bearing animals became especially important to Native peoples, European traders, frontier communities and the expanding international fur trade. Today, genuine furs and skins remain important materials for historical reproduction, Native American craftwork, rendezvous and living-history projects, as well as contemporary crafts and home décor.

Different furs provide very different characteristics. The short, dense fur of animals such as beaver and otter differs considerably from the long guard hairs and fuller appearance of coyote or fox, while rabbit and ermine offer lighter materials useful for smaller craft applications. Long-haired sheep and Angora goat hides provide still different textures and possibilities. For projects where genuine fur is unnecessary or unsuitable, selected imitation fur strips and hides provide additional options.

Furs & Skins for Crafts, Regalia and Historical Reenactment

Furs and hides may be used for craftwork, clothing and garment trim, hats and accessories, bags and cases, Native American-style craft and regalia projects, Fur Trade Era reproductions, mountain man and rendezvous clothing and equipment, living-history displays, rustic décor and other specialty projects. Because historically appropriate materials vary greatly by culture, region and time period, reenactors and craftsmen seeking a specific historical application should consider the species, geographic range and documented use appropriate to the project.

Natural fur is never completely uniform. Color, markings, density, length and other characteristics can vary from one animal to another, and different grades may be offered for projects with different requirements. Review the individual product descriptions for available sizes, grades, colors and other specifications when selecting the fur or hide best suited to your project.
