About Your Plains Ribbon Shirt Pattern

The Ribbon Shirt was, and still is, the Classic “Indian Shirt” in cloth and is worn by Feather Dancers, Straight Dancers, Gourd Dancers and, occasionally, by the “Singers” or “MC” at present day PowWows and Ceremonial gatherings.

Originally, it was worn by Indians east of the Mississippi, who modified the basic Anglo dress shirt style somewhat by adding decorations and changing the construction slightly. Appearing sometime in the mid-19th century and spreading Northward up the Mississippi Valley and Southward and Westward with the Indian migrations into Oklahoma, it is a very popular style with many tribes and is appropriate for wear with a number of different types of outfits, including street clothes.

Notions & Tools

Thread, 1 hook & eye, 4 - ½” buttons or ¼” snaps, 3 yds. of rayon satin ribbon and 1 yd. of 5/16” rayon satin ribbon.

Material Requirements

Suggested Materials

Light to heavyweight cottons, blends or synthetics in prints, stripes, brocades or solid colors. Many Old-Time shirts were made of silk. Striped fabric may require extra fabric to match stripes. Check yardage before cutting out pattern pieces.

Porky Roach Craft Focus

Porcupine Roach Care & Storage

An item that will contribute to a nicer looking roach is a tapered wooden stick on which to wrap it. A quick way to make one of these is to use a small baseball bat. Another method would be to carve a piece of wood to this same shape. Either one should also have a flat area down one side that conforms to the shape of the base and causes it to lay flat when it is wrapped on the stick.
