The Antler Nipple Pick is a specialized maintenance tool used by frontiersmen, mountain men, and hunters to clear debris from the ignition pathways of muzzleloading firearms. It features a small segment of animal antler serving as a handle, with a thin, stiff metal wire protruding from the tip.
How It Was Used
The tool was a vital component for keeping a muzzleloader functioning under harsh outdoor conditions.
Clearing the Flash Hole: Black powder burns incredibly dirty, leaving behind a thick, crusty residue known as fouling. After multiple shots, this carbon buildup would plug the tiny ignition hole—called the "touchhole" on a flintlock or the "nipple" on a percussion cap rifle. The trapper inserted the thin wire of the pick into the hole to scrape out the carbon.
Preventing "Misfires" or "Hangfires": If the ignition path was blocked, the rifle would misfire (fail to shoot) or hangfire (delayed shooting), both of which could be fatal during a hunt or a hostile encounter. Keeping the hole clear ensured the spark or flame from the cap could instantly reach the main gunpowder charge inside the barrel.
Clearing Environmental Obstacles: In the damp wilderness, moisture, mud, or stray grains of unburnt powder frequently clogged the rifle. The nipple pick was the primary tool used to quickly poke through these obstructions while out in the field.
