Horn: An Amazing Natural Material! Nearly a lost art in this plastic age of ours, the working of horn is kept alive by a handful of European artisans. This was the work of specialized artisans known as horners, whose trade was significant enough to be regulated by law in 15th-century England [2].
Who Used Candle Lanterns with Horn Panes?
Common Users: Farmers, tradespeople, and households used them for everyday lighting. They were especially valued in barns and stables, where broken glass could be hazardous to animals [2].
Settings: These lanterns were used outdoors, in barns, and in homes—anywhere a protected flame was needed. They were also used by travelers and night watchmen.
Crafting Cow Horn Lantern Panes
Material: The panes were made from cattle or water buffalo horns.
Process: 1. Horns were sawn lengthwise; 2. Flattened in hot presses; 3. Delaminated into thin sheets, scraped, and polished until nearly transparent [2].

- Tin or iron sheets or wood (for the frame)
- Cow horn sheets (or plastic substitutes for safety)
