About the Silver Fox: Not a separate species. A Silver Fox is a melanistic color variation of the Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes). Naturally occurring silver/black animals occur within Red Fox populations, particularly in northern portions of their range. Commercial silver fox fur has also had an extensive history of captive breeding because the coloration became especially valuable in the fur trade.
