These pen shell heishi combo chokers are 16" graduated hieshi strands of dark brown pen shell heishi with 'patterns' and brass in the center half. Really pretty! Just restring on Tiger Tail wire and attach a barrel clasp for a finished necklace.
About Heishi: Heishi are the wafer-like tubular beads which have been used in the jewelry of many cultures from ancient Egypt to the American Southwest. The origin of heishi in North America is inescapably linked to the Santo Domingo and San Felipe Pueblo Indians of New Mexico where the art and craft of heishi making reached its highest form. This may be the oldest form of jewelry in New Mexico, and perhaps in North America, pre-dating the introduction of metals. Crazy Crow Trading Post's shell heishi is a fine, imported product that should never be confused for the more expensive hand-crafted shell and stone heishi of Native Americans.
