This large scale tang butcher was one of the most popular styles of trade knives, as well as the handiest for all around camp use. Ours is reproduced from an original and features pinned, hardwood scales and 8" high carbon steel blade stamped with the well known "Snake Brand * Sheffield" and snake logo.
History records that by the mid-1800's, the Kitchin family, known for their distinctive rattlesnake logo, was already making knives in the Sheffield area.

The first review had to do mostly with esthetics. Now, I can provide a review on functionality. I shot a pronghorn antelope in Wyoming 3 days ago and used this butcher knife to help break it down. Worked great for carving roasts off the hind quarters.

Was really impressed by the Snake Brand Sheffield Butcher Knife. Felt much more substantial than a similarly sized Old Hickory. My only complaint is that the knife blade arrived wrapped and oiled. That in itself is a good thing, but the oil seemed to lift the paint from the "Snake Brand *Sheffield*" label found at the base of the blade. The removal of the paint also made clear the engraving depth varied as well, as portions of letters are completely nonexistent once the paint was removed. Its a small complaint, and the only one I can find. Overall, this is a fantastic knife for the price.
